After moving to the province next door - Alberta - I have to get an out of province vehicle inspection to get insurance here. I took it in today and my truck failed on the following:
seat belt frayed
oil leaks - valve covers (fire risk...)
anti-freeze leak - motor reliability

I have a seat belt on my parts truck which I will get sent down from my old home town.
I have the valve cover gaskets which I will replace.
I crawled under my truck, removed the skid plate and my water pump is leaking.

I have 14 days to fix everything, so I ordered a timing repair kit including water pump, timing belts/gaskets etc and have the valve cover, gaskets, and the seat belt should be here next week.

Kind of annoying because last week when I was at Home Hardware, a ford ranger went to leave the parking lot and his drivers side front tire fell off, I gave him a ride to his house and his truck was disgusting, broken front axle, no power steering (pump blown) and the worst thing if you can believe it, no brake/signal lights, and no exhaust system at all, sounded like a dune buggy; yet he can drive it around town. .

Thanks. I understand the whole inspection thing, but the stuff they can fail your vehicle on are very strict, such as: missing or loose (yes, loose) sun visor = FAIL. I tightened it; PASS :-\. I have 14 days to comply before I insure it or I have to pay another $200.00 to get it re-inspected, even if it passed the inspection.

˟˟˟˟ty deal about inspection. Any headway with that? I might be moving up to edmonton soon for work. I'm dreading inspecting my runners and the new tracker I picked up. Might just hold a BC residence and avoid that headache all together as I will really only drive my vehicles 1 maybe 2 weeks of the month and it will be straight back to BC

I just got my inspection approval, here's a summary of what failed:
rear brake pads (too thin/wore)
rear brake wheel cylinder dr. side leaking.
oil cooler leaking.
valve cover gaskets leaking.
sun visor passenger side loose..lol.
dr. side seat belt frayed.

I pulled off my skid plate before I took it in for the inspection to see what exactly was leaking and noticed anti-freeze coming from timing belt cover so I replaced the water pump/belt/gaskets as well.

here's a copy of the inspection, the actual inspection section starts on page 27. http://www.transportation.alberta.ca...ualdec2009.pdf They measure things like distance from the ground to mid-level of headlights, also if you have after market headlights, if they are not DOT approved, they will fail it; the truck light leds I have were fine.
There's a great pick & pull by sherwood park with some toyotas, I found out that a seat belt from a '93 4 runner will not fit in my truck..doh.
If you do move up, let me know..GL!

Wow. Those inspection criteria are crazy stringent!

Here's what TX inspects annually on light trucks -- cars similar but don't think they have to have mud flaps: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/vi/...nCriteria.aspx
Items of Inspection for a Pickup, Panel, or Truck Under 80"

05.02 Inspect Every Pickup, Panel, or Truck Under 80 Inches Wide For: (Listed in suggested order of inspection)

* Check for evidence of Financial Responsibility

1. Horn
2. Windshield Wipers
3. Mirror
4. Steering
5. Seat Belts
6. Brakes (system) Parking - (beginning with 1960 models)
7. Tires
8. Wheel Assembly
9. Safety Guards or Flaps (if four tires or more on rearmost axle)
10. Exhaust System
11. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models)
12. Beam Indicator (beginning with 1948 models)
13. Tail Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
14. Stop Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
15. License Plate Lamp (1)
16. Rear Red Reflectors (2)
17. Turn Signal Lamps (beginning with 1960 models) (mea-sure if 1959 model or earlier)
18. Head Lamps (2)
19. Motor, Serial, or Vehicle Identification Number
20. 1988 & newer - inspect for window tinting or coating
21. Gas caps on vehicles 2-24 model years old
22. Window Tint.
VS Alberta making sure each and every system on the vehicle is for all intents "Like New". Does this just apply to new residents or does every vehicle you buy/register/license have to go through this process?

I'm not sure, I stopped looking when I found the '93 4runner. Might be worth a phone call - (780) 464-6922

Yes, as BB said, it's for out-of-province vehicles, but none the less, still quite stringent. I did point out to the inspector that there are vehicles I've seen in my town that shouldn't even be on the road and he agreed, kind of annoying. They did miss a few things; I disconnected my daylight running lights, and my seatbelt buzzer isn't working, both which are a fail on their list.

Well, after 8 months of running with a dead 02 sensor I've got my new 02 sensor installed. I went to replace it back in April and broke one of the studs off, ever since my truck has run rich and thrown a code 26. It took me 2 months to find the 02 bung, no muffler shop in my old town would install it for whatever reason and then we moved. Fast forward to today, I took it in to get it done - only cost 60 bucks - and FINALLY my code 26 is cleared, and my idle is back to normal. Next up: ball joints.
If anyone is looking for a bung to replace the oem o2 bung on this year of truck, Bear River makes them, including the studs.

Two things:

First, what a great truck! Looks good.

Second, I am shocked when I hear about such strict inspections. I've heard Australians talk about the same sort of stuff.

Does that sort of strict inspection approach really increase safety significantly? Is it about taxes? I honestly don't get it.

I understand American import rules as mostly to do with protecting automakers' control of the market rather than about safety.

I dunno, I live in a rural area in the US and they just take your word for what the truck is worth and don't ask any questions at all about whether it is road worthy before giving you plates. They don't even check emissions here.

Thanks. As for the inspections, I'd like to think it's for safety, but it's a bit smoke and mirrors because there are quite a few vehicles I've seen that wouldn't even pass the 1st page of the inspection. They do perform safety road-side checks from time to time but they are no where near as strict or detailed as the out of province inspections. Ah well, I passed so it's over with now.

Marlin Crawler Short throw Shifter kit

One of the typical comments you hear about our trucks is the sloppy shifters, more so the older they get, and my wife especially, her Subaru's shifter is very close patterned. I waited a bit before this kit came out, Blue and others here have said it is a huge difference so I got one yesterday and installed it. Really high quality parts, and one of the biggest differences that sets it above other kits is that it actually shortens the shift pattern with modified shifter/socket and modified tunnel combined with with their already proven shift seat. The other kits use a spacer which only changes the shift angle to achieve a shorter pattern. Shipping was relatively quick, although I had to wait until stock was in when I wanted one, guess they are selling well. There is a core charge of $100 which makes this kit pretty decent at $179 after core exchange. They have the manual for this online which is very easy to follow.

Went for a test drive and it is TIGHT. It shifts nice and the pattern is close, what a great kit, really glad I bought it. I'll see if my wife notices.

Enjoy the new shifter. I got the LCE short shifter with new shifter bushing. Hot damn is it ever sweet, shifts like butter and very short throw with tight spacing.
