irab88's battery/intake swap

well, the thing is that i commute. it just means i'll get 350 miles a tank instead of 400. but i'm waiting to see if it's just a heavy foot behind the power
but to answer your question:
i do like being able to pass

You can try adjusting the AFM one notch leaner and see what that does for your mileage and power.

Take a razor blade and cut the silicone seal around the black plastic cover on top of the AFM and very carefully pry the cover off, you will see a gear going around the edge and its kept from turning by a metal keeper that holds it in place. Mark the gear were the keeper is holding it in place, Loosen the keeper and turn the gear one notch clockwise and tighten the keeper back down. Don`t let the gear unwind the spring that`s connected to it when you loosen the keeper. Now put the plastic cover back on and run a new bead of silicone around the cover to seal it back up.

sounds easy enough. i might try that later, after i've had a few tanks of gas with the current set-up. and i think my next project is going to be the exhaust, so i'll see where that puts my mileage

If your going to do the exhaust, then don`t make any adjustments to the AFM until you see what the exhaust does for you. Keep us posted on your findings.

ha. nope. i think i'll order it later this week. i just spent $340 on some new rs9000xl's, but i got paid on friday, so is that like breaking even? lol
the truck has a dire need for a new exhaust system. i just need to find someone to do the welding part, although, i might be able to do it myself with the help of my neighbor...
i'll post more about the exhaust later this week on my "build" thread, along with the shocks

update on the intake:
it works. maybe too well. as it got below 40 last night, i turned the heat on. nothing. i waited 10 or so mins before it started to warm up. but it was purrrrrrrrrrin' cruising up the freeway, so i'm not upset. the temp gauge barely makes it to 1/4 of the way over (as opposed to the usual 1/2). i know it works. and as for the mileage, it's back up to normal. i had plugged my plenum valve, so i put the hose/filter back on, which did the trick. i think i'll techron the system next week

i might have the wrong name. it's the part that makes the "gurgle" sound when the engine revs down and the throttle is closed. it's part of emissions and i can get pics later. but yeah, methinks that having it capped off was making the engine run too rich.

Okay, I've set here and read this thread three times, and I'm still not sure what you did besides move the battery from the passengerside to the driverside, and do something with a little pipe to something on the efi, to where the battery was???? I'm confused, what exactley did you do here? Also why?

In a stock set up the AFM is on the driver side, the air intake tube runs across the top of the radiator to the AFM and it picks up a lot of heat. By swapping the battery and intake you get colder air into the intake, and when irab88 swapped the intake over to the passenger side he also upgraded the AFM to a larger one, that will allow the 22RE to breathe better and give you a little more power. Many people here have done the battery/intake swap, as well as upgrade to a larger AFM.
couple more questions though, what exactly is the AFM? what does AFM stand for? And since this afm thing deals with airflow, is the power gain similar to adding a header, performance exhaust, orcold air intake box?
