irab88's battery/intake swap

(dial-up: keep out)
new thread for a new topic. originated from this thread

started planning today, so i took out the battery to see how to get over my troublesome a/c hoses. pics

don't need this...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrab/5026625145/
battery out
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrab/5026625153/http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrab/5026625165/
can't go under it, unless i can find a small radius 90* bend
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrab/5026625175/http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrab/5027247482/
i might be able to go over it...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrab/5027247484/
and i could try going between the hoses with 2 x 45*
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrab/5026625183/
so that's that. i have some other things to do, but i'll try to keep this updated

Would a 45 degree elbow work better coming off of the throttle body ?.

Here's my battery/intake swap. I did this for only one reason, which is to prep the truck for a 7MGTE swap. Hopefully picking up the motor before mid October so I can get it swapped in before winter. End goal is 300rwhp in two wheel drive. Not much more is really needed for a light truck like these, though more power can be easily had by turning up the boost.

I've had the battery swap done for a while, but just re-did the battery hold down because the L brackets on it didn't fit the DieHard Platinum properly, and the J hook for the firewall side of the battery hold ripped the sheet metal in the fenderwell. I used all stock pieces for this, simply because I didn't feel like spending money if I didn't have to, especially on things that I wouldn't be using for the motor swap.

The AFM wires can be easily separated from the loom they're in from the factory, and simply re-loomed (I used 3/8" wire loom) to route to the passenger's side of the truck. That was probably the easiest part of the swap.

All pics are clickable for larger versions:

First up, looking from the passenger side of the truck. You can see that I used the stock rubber elbow, and just cut it down in conjunction with the stock airbox. You're not getting any extra power from a cone filter on this motor, and the first time you hit a deep puddle you'll suck water right in. Ask me how I know, which is why I went back to the stock sealed up airbox

I don't have the PAIR system on my pickup anymore either. Took it off when I did the headgasket a few years back.

Now looking from the driver's side of the truck, you see the battery in the foreground. I extended the battery cables with some bolt-on extenders from Autozone. I sealed them up very well with large, adhesive filled shrink wrap, then brush on electric tape to further seal them up. Haven't had a problem with them at all, and everything works well. I'll be making a small sheetmetal battery tray before winter, so maybe I'll update this post when I do that. For now it sits fine as it is.

Looking straight down on the battery from the driver's side fender. You can see that I revamped the stock battery hold. The nut on the left you see securing the hold is screwed onto a stud that I welded to the radiator core support. Makes pulling the battery painless. Originally, I had a bolt/nut securing it to the core support, but that proved difficult for tightening it down properly, which lead me to the welded deal I've got going on now. Much better, SO much easier, wish I did that right off the bat!

Closer look of the battery hold down J hook going down to the wheel well sheetmetal. The darker black is new undercoat, as I mentioned earlier the sheetmetal started to tear out on me from the weight of the battery moving. The battery hold is nice and shiny because (as I also mentioned earlier) I drilled the spot welds on the L brackets of the hold, chiseled them off and moved them more inboard to properly secure the battery. Now it's nice and tight. I can grab the battery and shake it, and the whole truck moves but the battery does not.

And finally, the small reinforcement I welded into the wheel well for extra support for the J hook for the battery hold. Undercoated to prevent it from rusting- this should work just fine.

Hope that helps a bit! I don't have A/C on my Pickup, but any extra intake piping you need can be bought from www.siliconeintakes.com for cheap. It's all good quality stuff though for sure. I use them all the time! They also have silicone joiners, which are used to join one silicone pipe to another so you can pretty much route your piping anywhere!

they also have what?!? what is it!?!

seriously though, nice post. i like the use of the stock elbow. and since you don't have a/c, you could always pick n' pull a compressor and get yourself some on board air . where did you run the battery cables?

LOL!

Fixed my post. I plan to mount a York compressor there, and put an air tank where my spare tire used to be. I'll have air chucks at the front and back of the truck. Only thing stopping me is finding a good York compressor. I ran the battery cables in front of the radiator. I put them in wire loom and zip tied in place. There's no scrub marks on them anywhere, and I check periodically to make sure they're still secure and not rubbing anything.

most likely. i think i'll order some elbows this week and try some stuff out next weekend. (actually i calculated the exact angle to be 46.32 degrees) 45 should work well.

i ordered the 45 bends last night, so they should show up before the weekend. in the meantime, i'm gonna look around for some battery cables.

shaeff- when you ran your cables, did you move the alternator cable(s) to the driver's side, or just extend the pos and neg lines? i'm thinking of moving the alternator line(s) and running a pos to the fuse box (and possibly the same deal with the starter)

That would be the best way to do it, in my opinion. Since I have been planning the motor swap, I just extended the stock cables to reach the other side. It isn't ideal, and if you're planning to keep the 22re in there then I would do what you mentioned for a cleaner install and less likely to have anything get screwed up.

i'm thinking 2/0 or 3/0 cable for the hook-up. but then again, i may just need that to extend the starter and alternator cables, as those are the most demanding. i can't imagine the other electronics use that much current. the main thing i'll be compensating for is the increased length and temperature, both increasing resistance, so i can use just slightly larger cables. hmmm....

also, i looked on some charts, and they're all saying that for 100 amp draw at 12v for ~7ft requires awg 10. i dunno, but that seems kinda small

edit: i might also just use a set of jumper cables and cut off the clamps

my "train o' thought" is more like a "bumper car o' thought"

4 - 6 gauge wire will be more than heavy enough to use. 2/0 or 3/0 would be over kill for the swap, but its up to you on wich one you use.

Take lots of pictures. Im interested in how your going to do the wiring. I just took the larger AFM off of my truck and put all of the stock stuff back on, im in the process of getting what i need to swap the battery and AFM, then it will go back on.

i will take my time with the wiring. it'll be easy to do, but i want to get it right the first time. i have 2 options for doing this:

1) extend the wires from stock location. i would solder and heat-shrink them at both ends
pros: easy to route
cons: time consuming

2) move the stock location. it would involve cutting open a lot of cable wrap
pros: no extra connecting of wires
cons: i don't know if the wires will reach once separated from the bundle

the last "option" would be to do a combination of the two. if the wires almost make it, then i would extend them

and i have my camera charged and ready

Q: what can you do with 45 degree bends and 4 gauge wire?

A: find out, this weekend!

It looks good, but i see one problem. That scotch tape looking stuff that you used to wrap the wire loom with is crap, after a few hundred miles it will get brittle from the heat and start flaking off. Go to the parts store and get some black electrical tape and retape the wire loom and you wont have any problems. Let us know what you notice with the new set up.

i had a nice description before the server timed out, so here it is:

i got some electrical tape a while back. only problem was i was trying to color coordinate (another project), and black everything wasn't working. so i went to wally's world and found this. it's clear electrical tape. ul listed and everything. i have used the stuff so much, and it is awesome. i would never dream of using scotch tape for something in the engine compartment

now to go pop the hood and start working this morning
