intermittent rattle when decelerating

Hey guys, first post so be patient with me!

I just bought a 94 toyota pickup with the 22re with 200k miles. Recently before I bought it, the previous owner had replaced the head gasket, timing chain/ tensioner/ guides, camshaft with an aftermarket one, all injectors, and had the head ported.

Now that I own it, I have noticed it has a really bad rattle that happens occasionally when you decelerate and let off the throttle. It doesn't do it all the time, and it usually goes away after you accelerate again, however, sometimes it takes a several seconds of accelerating to come out of it. I have checked the timing chain myself with the valve cover off and it doesn't appear to show any rub marks. Both guides are also intact. I was able to reach in and pry against the tensioner and it has good spring tension and is not stuck. Lastly, i checked and adjusted the valves and they were all at the specified .008" and .012" and there are no signs of them contacting the valve cover.

Does anyone have any ideas? Here is a video I took-at the end you can hear it return to normal. Thanks!

That definitely sounds like a timing chain but the abrupt stop was unexpected.

A couple years ago I lost a bottom end due to failed tensioner. The chain shattered the inner part of the timing cover that keeps the chain engaged with the teeth of the crank gear even if you drop the chain into the cover. Interestingly enough, it didn't saw through the water jacket, just got very light rub marks. A big difference with my rattle compared to yours was that the sound was more erratic and would sometime get slower and quiet down, but never quit instantly.

If I had to guess, I'd say the tensioner is intermittently binding and then popping back out. Through tons of research (and wanting to avoid aftermarket after a NAPA tensioner killed my engine) people like the Japanese-made OSK tensioner the best, same one Toyota sells. Bolt torque affects how smoothly the tension arm rebounds (even on the OSK) and I found 9 ft/lbs worked perfectly with high-temp thread sealant on clean threads.

Let us know what you find out.
