I don't think you gain anything by dropping the tank. I did mine a few years ago and, as I recall, everything was accessible by removing the fuel pump cover panel and from underneath. Although I think cut the old line into pieces to speed the removal. Putting the new line in was "an adventure". I used a long, straight piece from Autozone and did my own bending. Not pretty, but nobody ever sees it so not a problem. It's been good for 2+ years now.
My biggest issue was finding the correct connector to the new fuel pump.
