Installing new idler arm???

I recently installed a new idler arm on my 87 4runner because the old one was about to fall apart. After putting it on and tightening the grommet nut as much as I could the arm still did not go all the way up the shaft to touch the grommet.? Should it? Does it need to be pressed on further with a press? Soon I will be putting on new tie rods and steering arm. Any helpful tips ???? They would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Can you post pics of what you mean?

You are not supposed to tighten the nut that holds the arm itself to the mount plate. Just the Castle nut that holds the arm to the Relay rod (aka draglink)

I am learning correct terminology. I would suppose the castle nut would be the one that has the cuts and pin after. I tightened that nut as much as I could. I will post a photo as soon as I can.

Stupid question maybe, but does your new idler arm look exactly like your old one? I found out the hard way that several of the chain auto parts stores have the wrong part number in their inventory lookup.

Yea it's the same. I figured it out. Actually I put a new pitman arm and tie rods in and now it works great.
