IFS Rebuild Questions
Hey guys i got a 93 pickup 4wd 5 speed, the truck has 186,xxx miles on it, so i figured its time for a rebuild/ up grades. I no yall are thinking why do it just SAS it and be done, but the truth is that i dont need all that i use my truck for a dd and light wheeling. i want to rebuild the steering with stronger parts, i plan on sleeving the relay rod with 1.50" .250 dom tube and replacing my tie rods with hiem joints, dos anybody see any problems wiht doing this? and also replacing my torsion bars with some 25mm sway aways.

Yeah man it sounds sick to me. Been done a couple times on here. I cant remember his screen name though.
I have heard that the 25mm torsion bars are crazy stiff though. Maybe bj spacers instead?
And dont forget that idler arm!

2DoorRunner dont worry i plan on getting the TC idler arm, and yeah ive herd they can be stiff but i plan on having a winch and bumper up front so it should help the ride some with the extra weight.
AxleIke i figured you would chim in lol, ive been over you build up many times and love it, you did a hell of a job. i wanted to use the fj80 rod ends but didnt want to cut and move the steering.
I no i have to drill the nuckles and relay rod out to 5/8's, is thear anything im missing besides building the tie rods sleaves for the hiem joints?

The relay rod will have to be drilled to 5/8 for the TC arm, will be drilled to whatever size bolt you use for the heims.
Not too much else to it. Just cut the relay rod, smooth off the forging marks, and weld up the tube. Make sure you sausage cut the DOM on the ends so that you don't create a shear plane in the steel when you weld it. I recommend rosette welds down the length of the tube. Should be good to go from there.
Then, just measure out your tie rod lengths, and make them up. I'd recommend welding double shear tabs onto both the relay rod and the knuckle, just for strength.

Easiest way to measure the tie rods is to take your old ones off and measure with a tape.

Hey guys can you come up with some links to see this step by step, it sounds awsome but I sure would love to see it. The welding terms especially I want to see what your talking about so it is done right. Thanks good luck.

Hi...I've been saving for 4 months now in order to rebuild my IFS, since one of my upper arm bushings was really destroyed.
I'll receive everything in about 10 days...All OEM parts...!!!
-2 upper balljoints
-4 upper arm bushings
-4 lower arms bushings
-I also may change the 2 lower balljoints pretty soon to...($$$)
-my advice is, for you to check your arms bushings, since we have very similar milles spent.

Axleike, I no it would be much stronger but i just dont want to cut the relay rod, I figured you had to use a tape lol, but the relay rod is so bent on my truck that the tie rods are adjusted way more on one side than the other so it would make getting a acurate measurment hard. But i did pickup my spare nuckles and relay rods today.
