Exclamation IFS Noise

Hi, i'm obviously pretty new here.
Anyways.
I have an 87' Toyota Pickup 4WD w/ 22R.
My main issue is this.
While the truck is in 4WD (hubs locked, xfer case in 4WD hi or low), there is a very distinct... howling of sorts accompanied with a terrible vibration.
Now, when the hubs are locked and the xfer case is NOT in 4, i still get the same sounds, just a different pitch.
And finally, when the hubs are unlocked, and the xfer case is in 4high or 4low, there is a very distinct growling. It's pretty noticeable at high or low speeds.

And it started making this noising during the icestorm we had last winter. I had just gotten my front driveline re-built because whoever put it in before me didnt have it re-balanced. The guy said the U-Joints were in great condition and the driveshaft wasn't phased (or balanced i can't remember). I put in the driveline myself, and soon after i got these horrible sounds.

Oh and, the truck isn't lifted.

how's your front drive shaft look and feel (from the transfer case to the front diff, not the CV shafts)

the slip-joint in them can ware and cause a lot of movement if they've been neglected and not greased

my 91 has that issue; I'll be putting on a new front drive shaft here pretty soon; it's got a lot of slop, and if I go more than 20-25 mph with the transfer case or hubs locked in, I get a bad vibration and noise

oh yeah, welcome to YotaTech

Like a window is open whistling sound when not engaged? and growling when engaged?
Like haha, Iamsuperbleeder (nice name brother) check your driveshaft but that wouldnt expain the noise when disengaged.
Its common in a evo to have the whisling sound for a transfer case to go to crap right after this sound occures. Also....
had an 85 4runner, thought I always had a window open till driving into work in the snow going 15mph and the thing locked up after growl growl, chunk, chunk, PLLLLUUUU, CRACK! Both diff gears locked up and went to crap.

Well, the driveshaft is literally near-new. I had it rebuilt, and about a week after it started this mysterious noise.

Another note:
With the truck lifted in the air in the front via jack, and passenger side hub locked, i can turn the wheel and hear a type of clicking noise. It starts of like a tick tick tick then turns into a waahwwaahhhwaaahhhh

I could remove the front driveshaft and lock the hubs and drive and see if it'll still make the sound. But, like the guy at the driveline shop said, the driveshaft had been well taken care of aside from being out of phase.

I guess tomorrow i'll be lifting it up and checking out the inside of the diff. What exactly should i look for? Metal shavings? Worn out gears?

@Screech: It's not a whistling sound, more of a whining grinding vibration..

Oh and, thanks .

For the front diff, just drain the fluid. Check for metal shavings on the drain plug and in the oil itself.. If there are large chunks of metal then you have a problem.

Make sure your hubs are in good working order, might need a rebuild (peanuts)..

wait you pretty much rebuilt them both? what do you mean by that? what iw would do is drain front diff and and check fluid like said above and then change out my xfer case fluid and check for metal shavings then i would rebuild the hubs both of them and then i would check both cvs and see if they are wore out and if so i would get new ones. for the hubs when you have them apart use a bit of grease and after you get it togther i would spray the spring and other things with some white lithium grease then put the dial and top piece back on

Well, after about 3 hours of wrench turning, me my neighbor and my dad figured out it was the passenger side CV Axle.. So, next thing is to completely tear down the passengers side IFS to get ready for a new CV joint xD
And by pretty much i mean i had to take them apart because the grease in them had.. well.. become loaded up with dirt and grime that my drivers side hub wouldnt unlock.Oh and, i just re-packed my wheelbearings on both sides and rebuilt my hubs with fresh grease.

Cool, glad you figured out the problem.

Im not sure why the drivers side axle would be the problem. You said you jacked up the front end, and spun the unlocked passenger side wheel and it made the noise. Was the CV axle turning??

Okay, new question here.
I've stripped my passengers side hub down to the spindle and CV axle.
I noticed when i was taking the passengers side CV bolts off, there was quite a bit of play in the mounting plate coming off the diff.
Is this normal?

ok,I'm having some trouble with my front diff( I believe). when it's in four it sounds like I'm running boggers at 50mph, both low and high. also if I have it out of four, but the hubs are locked, I can't go in reverse, it actually stops the truck from moving and will kill it. if I'm in 2 wheel drive and unlocked it doesn't do anything wierd. I have new cv shafts, new gears, manual hubs with new seals, new bearings all the way around and a recent four inch lift all done within the last three months. any ideas?
