Try removing the throttle body and see if it needs to be cleaned, they can get dirty and the vacuum ports on them can get plugged, and that can cause an eratic idle.

I agree with myyota. I drove a 95 camry before i bought my 4runner with a 2.2L engine. its got 190k on it, and occasionally has the same idle problem. what i really needed to do was clean the throttle body, but i would just pull back the air hose and squirt some carb medic down on the ports and it would start right up and idle fine. generally if you have this starting problem a little bit of revving helps, then you can go ahead and shift it into drive and you'll be fine for your trip if you can at least get going. good luck, i hope i made this easy to understand.

have you tried the tweak that metal09 suggested? maybe the previous owner set the idle high. has it had this problem since you purchased it, or is this a recent complication?

I have done that the idle screw is turned all the way down it still is doing the same thing but i think i have narrowed it down to the idle control valve any thoughts

Punctuation.

As far as the idle air control valve (IACV) goes I do know that they can cause an eratic or high idle. I have a similar issue on my 89 and am just saving money so I can purchase a new valve. I did read somewhere that you can remove it, clean it and readjust it but I haven't been able to find the information again. If I find it I'll post it up here so you can use it as well.

Welcome to YT.

yes that was it, it is now idleing at a steady 750rpm from my best guess was that the previous owners had a new engine put in but the shop that did the work didn't do a very good job cleaning the TB or the intake and the TB was sticking a little and also the guy I bought it from said he used some of the radiator fix crap and that along with a little rust clogged the IACV inlet now i can't say every idle problem is caused by this but it could be the fix for a lot of people because for me it did not throw a CEL

hey guys. im a new user but not a new yota owner. i have a problem that im hoping someone can help me with.
i have a 1990 4runner with the 3.0 v6. the engine was filthy so i decided to take it to a self serve carwash and washed off the engine. it started and ran fine on the way home. i parked it for about and hour and when i came back to go to the store it wouldnt start. starter was turning over fine but it just wouldnt kick over. i pulled off the distributor cap and dried out the little amount of water that was in there. it would now start but runs like crap and then dies. any ideas on what i messed up or what i can do to fix this problem? thanks in advance.

I have a similar issue with my 95 4runner V6 4WD. When I start up the engine it cold idles at ~800. After driving the vehicle (anywhere from 15-30 minutes) when I put it in park the rpms go to ~1800.

I am just looking for a place to start looking to diagnose the problem. Also, recently the overdrive light flashes after driving for fifteen to twenty minutes.
