I have a '95 Toyota 4Runner 2wd. The other day my check engine light came on, and I checked it. It gave me code 42, which is the vehicle speed sensor. I think that is weird because the speedometer is mechinical. Also my O/D off light keeps flashing. And when I make a stop then proceed, it suffocates and doesn't respond that well. Any suggestions?

 

I can't help you to much since I don't have a lot of experince with Toyota automatic transmissions. But I think the code is related to the transmission and not the speedo cable.

 

Do you know what it might be?

 

ABS, check the top of the rear differential for a speed probe.

I also have a 95 4runner and it has one there, if yours has ABS (does it?) there should be a speed sensor there, maybe on the 2wd they put it on the transmission. generally "vehicle speed sensor" is related to ABS and tied directly to something axle/driveshaft related. If your speedo went out you wouldn't need a code to tell you that, and you said it's a cable. Most transmission functions don't need a speed sensor. I'm not home right now to go check mine to see if there is anything on the tranny.

 

I think that the tranny itself has a speed sensor that helps control the tranny.

The abs sensor on a drear diff is for the rear wheel-only abs.

I think '94 was the first year (in 4Runners at least) you could get 4 wheel abs which has an ABS speed sensor on each of the 4 wheels.

 

I don't think it's ABS, but to make sure how would I know if it's abs? I know it's SR5.

 

Ok so the speedo cable is at the end of the tranny. On the opposite side of the tranny there is a sensor, opposite from the speedo cable, but I am sure that the sensor is for the pressure.

Looks like the tranny speed sensor is on the case above the shift cable and range switch.

 

When you have the mechanical speedometer, the speed sensor is inside the combination meter (instrument panel). http://web.archive.org/web/201102052.../6combinat.pdf That is what throws code 42 ON THE CEL.

The flashing O/D light is the diagnosis system for the transmission. http://web.archive.org/web/201408161...31diagnosi.pdf Follow the link to read the codes. Unfortunately, the transmission can throw its OWN code 42, which refers to the speed sensor IN THE TRANSMISSION.

There is no (external) pressure sensor on the transmission. The transmission absolutely needs to know the speed for the ecm to control the shifting. (It's been a long, long time since transmissions shifted on pressure alone.)

 

Isn't that the transfer case? Mine don't have one.
