Does it have a module in distributor? If so take it out and most auto stores will check it. Just a suggestion before you get all crazy and change distributor.

Had the very same issue this past spring... It would randomly cut out, then start back up. It left me stranded at a hobby shop one night, and after I fixed a broken wire in the cab it started back up. So I had it fixed right?

Now at this time I had a complete wiring kit for my FJ40 on the way, and according to the tracking info it would show up Tuesday. So Monday night I pulled the FJ40 in the garage and ripped out all of the wiring. Tuesday the wiring harness came in, and I cracked into it as soon as I got home from work. I decided to run up to Napa to get a few more connectors before I started. Hopped in the truck, turned the key and it wouldn't start... And when it would catch, it struggled to idle. I think I wasted a good hour trying to start it, and figure out the problem.

So with the truck down, I started the wiring on the FJ40. I managed to get it running again that night, but still needed to run all the wiring for the lights. I got a ride to and from work the next day. Wednesday I wired up all the lights, and drove that to work the rest of the week with no top or doors in the cold....

Now back onto the truck, my bed bolts were all rusted to the point that I couldn't pull the bed off the frame. So I had to drop the tank, which was pretty full at the time as well. So I siphoned out as much as I could before dropping it. Once I got the tank out, I realized it was not my fuel pump. The ground wire to the fuel pump bracket had broken off at the tab. Went to the dealership and they had the brackets in stock, since it is a common enough part to fail.... The bracket set me back $100.
