I feel the need... the need for speed!

Broyotas,

I don't normally like to mix my 80s movies but as you know I am rebuilding a replica of the BTTF3 Toyota 4x4. Now that I am almost done with restoring the interior, and the exterior is pretty much done, I am going to start working on the engine. Currently I have the stock 86 EFI 22RE. However, being a 4 cylinder it's slow as crap. Nothing like what the truck in Back to the Future can do. If you haven't seen the movie in a while check out this Youtube compilation:

I've done quite a bit of research and one thing people are certain about is that it's been modified quite a bit. What I'd like to do is pick your brains. How can I increase power and speed while still maintaining the classic "22RE" look? I want to make it torque when I rev it up like in the movie. I'd also like to make it as fast as possible. The problem I am running into is that I'm not a mechanic. I don't know much about this stuff aside from what I read. So everything I do to it I will have to pay someone to do. Which is fine - but I'd like to go about this smart and effeciently. I plan on entering my first car show on April 27th and I'd like to get as much done before then as I can. So let it begin... what can I do to increase horsepower while maintaining the 22RE engine?

There is nothing you can do to make your truck fast without spending thousands of dollars, and even then, it won't be as strong as a stock 3.4. Just enjoy what the truck is, a pack mule or camel, but not a thoroughbred.
