Oy punk, don't argue with the old man! Let me translate what he said to something you might understand better. "I'm not paying for a bigger motor so you can go out hot rodding and kill yer self. And I sure ain't paying for the extra gas!"

It's bigger nuff said. Well not really, people just want more power for various reasons. You'll notice the 4cylinder guys crawl right over the same stuff the v6 and v8 guys do.

It all comes down to if you live under his roof you play by his rules till you move out.

But you may want to tell him this can cause serious problems later in your life about the time he might enjoy your company if you have not killed each other.

Your being much to busy to visit because your suppressed 4x4 building has kicked in.

Another approach is to agree with him and say well with the money I don`t spend it here on this . I can spend pretty much the next year every weekend going to the wildest clubs in your area.

Some people are clueless when it comes to mechanical things most often the ones that see the electric car as the future.

So tell Pop I say I agree 100% the 3.4 is a viable swap!!! If one has a dead engine or a very tired one.

from doing one myself it is a tremendous upgrade in motor and probably the least expensive of motor swaps you can do for that truck.
they made the 3.slow because they did not have the 3.4 yet. 3.0 makes bad mileage, bad power, and sucks to work on for what the tradeoff is.
when they ditched the 3.0 and 22re the 3rz made the same power as the 3.0 with 2 less cylinders.

FWIW, the 3VZ-E has a flatter torque curve and retains more of its peak power output at high rpm(power output doesn't nose-dive at 4500 rpm).


But the reality is, the 3VZ-FE actually makes more power/torque per Liter than the 5VZ-FE. ~61.7 HP & 65 ft.lbs. vs. 56 HP & 64.7 ft.lbs.


So stick that in your pipe and smoke it...

3vze = old tech
5vzfe = old tech with lots of upgrades... wiring harness, way better, heads, way better, cooling system, it's actually SIMPLER... which makes it more reliable... ever compared the mess of vacuum hoses and VSV's under a 3.0 hood vs under a 3.4 hood>?

I love my 3.4's... and i rebuilt a 5vz and put it in my 3vz... every single part is designed better... harness, plugs, sensors, etc etc

Now, if your engine is in good shape, i agree with pops. If yours is on the way out, it's a great upgrade that brings your truck into the next decade of reliability.

I'm just relaying facts here. I'm not even stating my opinion on the matter. I've done that enough already.

If the motor you have now is dead or about to go then the swap CAN be worth it.

Otherwise, no. It's not really worth the expense.

"worth it" is subjective on might say.
is it worth it for the perceived fuel efficiency increases? math points to not really. even if you could drive that many miles to realize, any noticeable increase will lost too enjoying the increased power.

it may be worth it if there are several more steps in the upgrade path as the 5vz is more upgradable.

is it worth it to have the increased performance and it's all yota? ohhh yeah!!

I don't see a significant MPG increase with the 3.4 vs the 3.0. 1-2mpg MAX, and only on long drives no less.

I'd just go a step farther and put a fuel injected small block Chevy in there. Just run good mufflers to tone it down and forget about it.

Well to clear up the "you're just a punk kid" comments. It's my truck that I love and want to keep forever and I AM THE ONE who would pay for the swap. Also in terms of being worth it we were talking about the swap in general not necessarily to mine. He said the 3.4 is just a bored out version of the 3.0.
