Hub Problem???

so i've had this problem for a couple of weeks..but have been working on other things instead of this...so..

couple of weeks ago i was on some old hunting roads..and got stuck in 2wd..so i locked the hubs..and threw it in 4lo...crawled right out..no problem this time..went back to deer camp..driving around in deer camp..there are some places where people have been MUD BOGGING..(this stuff is DEEEEEPPP!!!)..so i find some stuff that isnt as bad..cuz once i seen that i had to go muddin..lol..so i got out..locked my hubs back in...put it in 4 hi...and nothing...i have no 4wd..just my rear tires are spinning..same thing in 4 lo...

WHAT THE HELL!!?!?!?!?!?

so yesterday..just out of curiosity i lock my hubs in...put it in 4lo..and to my suprise...IT WORKS!..so i unlock the hubs..go to town with some friends..get back to the house..locked my hubs again..put it in 4lo..and NOTHING..no 4wd AGAIN...so what the hell...

what could be causing the driver side hub to lock sometimes...but not others...(i can tell its the driver side hub because of the CV axle not spinning..with the passenger side locked the passenger side CV turns with the wheel..with driver side hub locked the driver side CV does NOT turn..(my boots are torn..and im getting new CV's soon) so idk whats the matter..just thought i would get some opinions before i tear into it..sometime in the next couple of weeks..

thanks for the help

Well the first thing I would do is check the springs inside the hub. Make sure they aren't broken at all. Check the gear inside.Clean it all up re-grease.Kinda sounds like a cv to me. You said you are getting new cv's so if the problem is the cv shaft itself that will be fixed when you change them out.
I just did my cv's a week ago.It wasn't a hard job but having a friend to help is nice. Having that extra set of hands when you need them is the key. Good luck!

Do you know for a fact it is in 4WD? The light is on in the dash each time?

well im not POSITIVE its in 4wd..as my 4wd light doenst work..the plug came unplugged...and i CAN NOT find where it plugs in it..i've looked and felt EVERYWHERE on the T-Case..and my back up lights dont work..and no its not a fuse..anyways

how could a CV cause it to not engage...wouldnt there be some kind of grinding noise..

when i twist the hub to lock it in..it doenst even feel like its engaging..it feels as though its just spinning freely..passenger side hub feels fine..just like it should..either way..im rebuilding the hubs when i do the CV's..

at the same time..im puttin a new clutch in...replacing all of my u-joints..just because..and HOPEFULLY getting new shocks..as mine arent good...and when i do my BJ spacers (whenever that will be) im getting new balljoints as well..upper and lowers...lots of parts that need to be bought and put on..should all be a fun job in the Auto service shop at the local vocational school..

the driver's hub, when you turn it the "lock" postition,('bout a 1/4" turn) does the dial stop turning, or can you turn the dial all the way around?

yes it stops..i can only turn it from LOCK to FREE...but as im turning it from FREE to LOCK (or lock ro free) it doenst feel like its engaging anything..as though its just turning..
