How to tell if......86 4Runner....
I am thinking about purchasing an 86 4RUNNER. Back when I had my 88, I has the dash out and noticed that it was VERY EASY to remove and replace the ODOMETER (instrument cluster) with another. What I am getting at....there are many low mileage odometers out there...and many high mileage trucks.
Is there any markings on the cluster that will let me know that its been with the truck since new??
If not....can one ever be sure there not being scammed?

One thing I've learned in life is that "If it's too good to be true it probably is." Anyways, if the miles are really low and the ruck looks way more haggard, or if the miles are low and it's really clean. You could probably just feel out the situation. I don't know about any markings tho, maybe someone else will chime in

with 144,000 miles they should look bran new...cause theres no way the original pedals could last that long lol...my truck has 124,000 and my rubber on the pedals fell off two years ago.

I have 209k mi. on my '86. Pedals are little worn at the edges, but no where near eating through. It's my light touch.... (Actually, enviromental factors have alot to do with wear on the pedals
To the original question...
How to tell? Look the fella in the eye when you ask about it.

These trucks are so old now and worth so little that I some what doubt anyone out there is trying to pawn off theirs as a low mileage example. I will say this back in my BMW days one could find the cluster with a date stamp in ink of the same year and month the car was built.
Pedals are really not a good indicator, I just bought two brand new ones from Toyota.

Yeh....the pedal comment I made was a PHA-SEE-SHUS comment!
I'll see if I can find a date stamp...but I dont remeber one on the 88.
I dont look at these trucks being old...I mean come on....its 21yrs old....in the prime of its life...able to buy Premium Drinks....and quite good looking!

CARFAX!
It will list all of the times the vehicle was registered, and what the mileage was at the time of registration (if the state requires mileage reporting). It will also list if the vehicle passed emissions if your area requires them (and what the mileage was when it was tested). A CARFAX report will also tell you if the vehicle ever had its odo rolled back, or other wierd issues.

Often hard to find but very nice is a good set of maintenance records. If the dates and mileages line up reasonably, you know what you've got.

Like has been said before...gut feeling when you look him in the eye...thats my test....just wanted to know about the cluster though....

I was just sarcastically pointing out that it doesn't matter how many miles are on it. I guess that didn't contribute, though. My bad.
Check the frame for rust. Make sure the rear window functions. Check how sloppy the shifter is if it is a manual. They tend to getty sloppy with miles.
Look at the floor matt or carpet. Of all the cars I've had, the pedals don't wear so much as that little bald spot on the carpet where your foot rests.
