i have 3.slow 4.88's 33's 5spd and i get just about 14 mpg but i think i can get a little better i have not had any time to tinker around with it to see if anything needs replacing but it feels pretty good in the power department.... i get about 200 to 215 to a tank with the bigger gas tank, depends how far i push it and what gas i use my truck..... my truck is very sensitive to witch gas station i go to... dose any one eltz notice this if u go to a better gas station ur trucks runs way better or is it just my imagination??

250mi = 16mpg city to 20mpg highway I filler-up at around 200mi. I get a lot less MPG when I am playing off road at the beach or at the 4wd park.

89 3.0L V6 - Auto

11.8mpg is my average as per my spreadsheet. My first Toyota as of about a month ago. Love it, but damn, I hope I can get better MPG out of this guy.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure.

Thinking about checking my O2 sensor. I just replaced my cap n rotor the other day unfortunately because it crapped out on me. So this most recent tank should determine whether or not it helps. Maybe that'll help some? (I'm not too car savvy yet).

I've just resigned it to the fact that it's an auto for the past 3 years...

good luck with finding the issue
Plugs, Wires, Cap, and Rotor were changed about this time last year, maybe even january, so i doubt it's any of them...

How do i check to see if the afm is working?...

I've been watching for fuel leaks, because i smell fuel every now and then (usually right after a fill up), but haven't found anything yet...

My fuel cap is holding pressure in the tank for some reason, could this be a factor?

I'll have to have dad check the compresion don't know anything about that... same with the valves... and i don't exactly trust myself to check that properly lol....

Temp gauge hasn't worked (while moving) since i've had the truck, if i'm idlein in a parkin lot or at a red light, it'll go about a quarter to half way up the gauge, then soon as i move, it bottoms out, gussing it's the sending unit and not the t-stat, but all the parts stores arond here a too dang stupid to get the right sending unit ...

Oil was just changed to Penzoil 10w30 2 days ago as well, I burn about a quart every oil change...but that ain't bad...

currently running courser OTD MT's on 30x9.50x15? or maybe 31x10.50 can't remeber right now tires on steel rims...

Thanks, i guess i'm gonna need it...

A few other things you could do:

Check your timing and make sure it's up to par with factor settings. Timing lights are cheap and are so useful too.

Switch oils to something with less weight. You may not be in high climate but using 5w 30 might help.

AC?

Also i know your truck is a bit old but I recently flushed all differential fluids/transmission fluids with synthetic 70W 150V. (It's been a while but I think it was viscosity 150). Anyway, that greatly reduces "work load" of the pickup.

Just some things to try, you probably already know all this stuff anyway but good luck!

I get about 250-300 miles to the tank, depending on how i drive.
I also don't have a gas gauge. Just a light that blinks when i'm low

Good point on gear oils. Most people don't believe that it makes a difference, but it does.
Most the shop manuals for these trucks have a section on oils and climates, choose the lightest weight's and go synthetic and you should notice some improvement. I did.

My 1988 4Runner 3.0 auto Completely stock

I avg right at 19 MPG in suburban Albuquerque at 6000 ft
That is an avg over the last 9000 miles. Best ever was just over 20 and worse was right at 17. My truck has 267k, rebuilt at 258k and a FULL tune up done at the time of rebuild.

I know the Gen II are bigger and heavier but its shocking to me that I am getting 50% better MPG than one of those. Glad I bought a First Gen!

EFI = elevation doesn't matter.
I think theres more 2 it then a little bit heavier then 2nd ten, and ya there heavier. But .1% more aero dynamic due to the rounder bends.

I think : more of a gearing/tires/engine condition/amount of stuff in the back/driving style than anything else.

Anybody think the same?

Totally agree. Especially the driving part! You can't just haul a$$ from the stop light and get it to 65 as fast as possible (as most drivers do). It's an old vehicle and who really cares who makes it to the next red light? Lol.

Gearing, tires, engine condition, weight too!

I know my budy complains his 22re only gets 19MPG and he wonders why my pickup does better. I tell him "look at your bed... you have 400 million tools, a topper, enough carper for a room, and a spare gas tank. It adds up, 1000 xtra pounds DOES make a difference in driving. Not to mention it's harder on the clutch when driving.

My gauge quit working years ago too.

I rely on that little orange light too. That and the trip odometer. I can tell about how much I have left in the tank by the mileage.

i get 200-275 miles to a tank.

rebuilt 3vz with .020 bore, filthy K&N, heavy arse 10ply toyo M/T's with heavy rims, 4.56 gears and a 5speed.

thats highway, city driving i get less obviously.

oh and i reach 5000 rpm's numerous times daily.......that means i DRIVE my truck lol...if i was to REALLY try, i bet i could squeeze out 20mpg if i REALLY tried...i've squeezed out 18mpg before just barely trying.
