A few factors:
Ditch your AC!
Drive like an angel
Routine checkups (myself)

I guess i have a hard time figuring out why everyone else is getting 16mpg highway with this engine. Mine towed an 87 dodge pickup 78 miles up and down the rocky mtns. Got 18 hw still and faired well on the inclines. Maybe I got lucky? Lol. Elevation? 7000+

I'd like to see some data on your claims.

BTW unless you have a long bed you have a 17.2 gallon tank.

No problem, next time I go to the front range and back i'll show you if need be. Always good to have skeptics i suppose.

As for the gas tank, thanks.

I live in Leadville which is at 10,200 ft and I get about 22 mpg's in my 22re. When I was at sea level on the east coast I was was getting 19-20.

I think up here less oxygen = less fuel burned so I would believe he's getting 18 with a 3.0. Now at sea level I bet his mpg's would be worse.

Have you replaced your cap and rotor? Spark plugs and wires? 22re should get better than 14 even if it is auto.

could be a number of things. plugs, cap/rotor, afm, fuel leak, bad compression, leaking valves, bad t-stat, etc. and that's just from the engine.

good luck with finding the issue

I get about 300 - 325 miles on a 15 gallon tank. That is even going up and down a lot of hills...

Gas tanks in the 2nd gen 4Runners are 17.2 gal on vehicle that came with stock 225-75R15 and are 18.8 gal on those that came with 31's. I believe that each tank has about 1 to 2 gals which are unusable.

That said, I have one with the 17.2 gal tank and get about 17 mpg on highway running 31's.

I typically get about 230 miles per tank before I fill it up again which is about 19 mpg and that is driving around town, I never get on the freeway. The old guy at my work that drives a 2wd 22re claims to get over 30mpg but I think he is embellishing a bit.

I used to get around 19 mpg in the summer, between 12 - 15 gallons per fill-up, 290 - 310 miles between fill-ups. But recently it has dropped to 16, however my I've had problems with my front brakes sticking so I haven't run a full tank through it to calculate my new mileage. I've only been getting around 250 miles between fill-ups, about 17-18 gallons per fill-up.

When calculating fuel economy, never EVER calculate it by what the fuel gauge reads. Always fill your truck up and read off of what the pump says. Also, if you have bigger/smaller tires, your odometer will be off. I did the calculations and it seems that for every 1 mile that my trip odometer reads, I'm actually going 1.066 miles because of my larger than stock 32 inch tires. I actually just figured that out a couple weeks ago so my summer mileage would actually be a tiny bit higher, probably around 20. Sorry for rambling on xD Hope this helps!

Ive ran it out of gas to were it wouldn't run, then toped it off till there was gas coming out of the spout, and it was just under 16gal.

I read somewhere that I have a 19.3 gallon tank. Does anyone here think that sounds correct? When I've gone to fill it up, I've had it close to about 18 before.

I never drive too long when the fuel light is on. I don't think I've let it go below 1 gallon. It is funny how off my gauge is because I once filled up when my gauge said I had a 1/4 tank and it only took 12 gallons.

well, 3/4 of a tank of gas is ~14 gal, so it sounds about right.

you're lucky. my low fuel light doesn't work.
