NEVER overheat the 3.0 and you won't have an issue.

263K on my 89 pickup 4x4. Previous owner was manic about maintance and did all that was needed(Some even before was needed). Had a new headgasket at some point also a timing belt and water pump. Still getting about 18-19mpg and running awesome!

My 92 has 148K, runs smooth w/ water pump replaced @ around 126K. A bit of a ticking during heavy acceleration. Maybe a valve job in the future??? Or bad gas? How far will a 3.0 Tranny go? Hmmm?

I have read a lot of negative on the 3.0 and after having just bought a 91 with 202,000 I was just buying it so as not to have to use my 01 with a 3.4 automatic for rougher conditions. But I have to say that with a stick I was very impressed and the motor is still going strong. It has had the recalls done so I am not worried about adding more mileage and making it my DD. I havent seen any 6 cylinder that I would consider a powerhouse. I am really thinking the 3.0 just got a bum rap.

to play devil's advocate - what about the turbocharged 3.8L GNX engine, or the turbo 4.3's found in cyclones and typhoons?

You are right about the 3.8 Grand National, a friend of mine had one and it was quick, and I forgot about the cyclones as I seen one that could get down the road in no time at all, but just and everyday driver I dont know many more. I love my 3.4, but there has been some times entering a freeway that I wish I had a little more go.

252,728 miles, with valve cover leaks... prevous owner had overhaul done, so my head gasket and timing belt should bee good for a while... bought it with 252,323 and have already put a new battery in radiator flush, radiator cap, and a fail safe thermostat.... oh, and ran seafoam throught the tank and through vacuum lines... hopefully after i replace the valve cover gaskets it will give me a break on replacing things!

seems as i've had bad luck on mine compared to others. im at 242k miles and my motor still runs great. head gasket replaced around 239k, and i've put 2 water pumps, timing belts, all new hoses, all new vacuum lines, alternator, distributor, cap, rotor, brakes, wires, lockouts, tranny cooler, rebuilt transmission, cv axles, radiator, power window motors,... etc. the list goes on and on. but hey its old, and i think the person who had it before me abused it. its getting new exhaust next week as the cat is plugged and robbing me of power. i do believe however that it will run another 100k miles if taken care of well.

x2 on the never overheat. i have the auto so EVERY NOW AND THEN, that happens.

Tim.

...Mine at 215.000+ miles, replace HG's twice, first HG fail ( cheap HG, not thick enough ) then got some of those MLS HG and still running strong. Giong in steep hill at 65 miles per hour no problem. Previouse owner said it use to be an police SUV so they might have abuse it alot, and when ever I got something fix there always something that got to go, right now I am giong to fix my booster just right after I finish the swap and HG, suck big time... So whenever they say the truck run great I suggest you try to avoid those, that is what happen to me lol, he said that it ran great np at all but less than 2,000 mile of driving it, it blew the HG, and find out that he use those barleak HG repair stuff, that help it a bit but it still blew... He said that he is giong to use the money that I paid him to pay off his new car.

Like other said if it doesn't over heat then it can go as far as you want it to go, cross country np...

i got 183.900 miles on the ol girl.

HG was never done, but its going, its got a year or two (approx. 24000 miles) according to Toyota. its only leaking oil. The truck leaks oil im told in a lot of places. HG's, valve cover gaskets, and some other places. it uses about a quart of oil between changes, but i dont think its burning ANY, i just think its leaking. the truck sat for 4 years, so im sure that didnt help the seals or anything....

I have about 217K miles(and never had the timing belts changed since 79K miles)on mine. I need a rebuild though because it has a burnt valve (or maybe 2 since it really runs like crap). It has been running badly for a while now though. At least I finished the SAS. Next project after the engine rebuild are 4.88/5.29's and 37's and dual cases to finish.

Keep in mind your 2.4 would likely not outlast any 3.0 if it were pulling a 4X4 4runner, 33's and an auto tranny. In a small truck a small engine will last a very long time.

For comparison's sake, it is a good idea to note the mileage and modifications to the vehicle since off road mods typically make the engine work harder and wear faster.

188K right now. The HG was done at about 75K according to the reciepts. I like to believe I treat my engine well, shifting at 3K and everything. But it's just so hard to do doughnuts at 3K...
