I use this exact method all the time. It is messy, but it works great.
I usually use a bolt that is slightly smaller than the ID of the pilot bearing, then wrap electrical tape around the shank of the bolt so that it fits the ID of the bushing perfectly. A few taps, a little more grease, and a few more taps usually does the trick.
