Not on a spun bearing. Too forceful. Splitting the inner race relieves the tight grip it has on the spindle so it slides right off (with fingers).

What I've done in the past, and was recommended by an old timer mechanic is this:

Drop the spindle into the freezer over night. next day heat up spindle, and the bearing will usually fall out on its own.

Cold contracts, heats expands.

Thats a great idea for the mechanic getting paid by the hour. This mechanic just needs to get the job done and get on to the next vehicle. Commission lights a fire under you.

Well, if a mechanic is at his wits end trying to solve this problem, I think its an even better solution for him. obviously he didnt get it done in a day, so that night, while at home, it freezes.

I just mentioned this, because whenI was apprenticing in HD mechanical, we used to do this all the time for highway rigs. Made the next morning alot easier to bear.

I'm not saying it won't work its just time consuming. I can see HD vehicles being different but on smal parts it works just fine. Maybe he didn't have a cutoff wheel or was out of the discs.

Either way, I feel for him.

I just had to zap off the tops of both of my front shocks. It drove me crazy trying to unseize that damn nut.

Its things like that where you think "if somone would just come and do this for me, while I was at lunch, I would be very happy"
