How desireable are '85 (SA) 4runners with the 22RE? This one seems expensive...

This truck popped up for sale locally and I thought it would be a neat trail rig....but I think he is asking too much for it after looking at it. Its an '85 (SA) with the 22RE...it has over 240k on it, the body is fair except the rear wheel wells are COMPLETELY rusted through, missing back window, etc. Interior is not that great either, its the cheapo vinyl all manual stuff, missing the stereo and window cranks - overall a serious beater. He also welded up the rear end - hillbilly locker He's asking $2500. This sounds like a pretty inflated price to me but he's trying to sell me on the "rarity of a fuel injected motor with a SA". I don't think I'm going to buy it, but I'm wondering: Am I off base here or are these trucks REALLY bringing that kind of money (in this kind of shape)?!?

Thanks!

offer him no more than 1000$ as is. a working 4x4 is worth that much and you will have to drop a few more $$ to get it road worthy. check it out as best you can, if you can get it for less than a 'g' note it will make a decent trail rig.

OK, my thoughts exactly, I said $1500 tops. I'm not even going to offer the guy anything, if he thinks he can get that I'll let him sit on it a while. He openly disclosed that he bought it not running - needed a starter and a rear end....he put those in and is reselling to make money. I'd bet he paid 500 bucks for it and now has some notion that its an ultra rare vehicle so he can price gouge. Sad when people take such a cool affordable truck and rake people over the coals with it, but its a free country and he can do as he wish. OK my rant is over LOL.....

Tap Recycling in SoCal (http://www.taprecycling.com) just sent me a notice of an '85 22RE that they just got in that is listed as having NO damage. The pic looked pretty decent, and I bet they'd sell it for a lot less than $2500!
