Hey fellow yota geniuses!
I'm fairly new to posting on here so please bear with me. PROBLEM---> All of a sudden without warning my clutch pedal is loose. I press down on it and there's no pressure and it will not engage the fly wheel. I can't shift it into any gear and when I do I'm forcing it to where I feel like I'm gonna snap the shifter in half. What is going on and where do I begin? Any info will greatly be appreciated.

Sounds like your clutch isn't disengaging. The synchronizer balk rings in the transmission prevent it from shifting if the input shaft is still turning while the output shaft is stopped. That's why it won't go into gear. Don't force it; you could wind up breaking something in the tranny and turning a relatively simple problem into a big deal.

The clutch actuation mechanism is dirt simple. The pedal connects to a push rod that connects to the master cylinder. Fluid flows from the MC to the slave, and the slave pushes the clutch fork to disengage the clutch. You just have to observe where the motion is getting lost.

Here's a checklist
- Make sure it's full of fluid
- As said, check under the dash for bracket breakage. Observe the push rod while moving the pedal and make sure pedal movement translates into rod movement.
- Make sure the push rod is still connected to the pedal. If the lock nut comes loose, it's possible for the push rod to vibrate and turn far enough to fall out of the nut on the pedal. Not likely, but possible. It's also possible, and more likely, for the rod to spin the other way and shorten so much that the clutch won't disengage even with the pedal pressed to the floor.
- Crawl under the truck and look for movement of the slave cylinder while someone is operating the pedal. Make sure the fork is attached to the slave cylinder.

If the mechanics of the pedal look good and the system is full of fluid, but there's no motion at the slave, it's likely your master cylinder is leaking internally.

Since this happened suddenly, I'm betting on a broken bracket or a leaky master cylinder.

 

yeah, if it's not a cylinder i'd bet the bracket. i had the same thing happen on my 84' Supra; felt like the pedal was down, but the bracket upper was flying high off the mounting point instead

 

Hey folks. OK I'm back from ignoring my truck. I read all of your suggestions and I'm going down the list and hopefully its just the bracket. I'll update you all in a couple of days.

Well i fee like an !!! I checked the pedal bracket and that was good. I take a second look at the MC reservoir...but this time I opened and looked inside. To find it BONE DRY!!! DOPE! I filled it and bled it and now my beast is back on the trail! Lesson of the day: don't be lazy and glance at things and assume the worst. Thanks to all of you that replied and got me headed in the right direction. This forum is soo awesome!

Nice! Now to find where the leak is?

 

Rworegon yup! That would be the next step. No fluid thru the firewall. Is there some sort of dye I can mix with the fluid and not mess up my clutch? It'd be sweet if I can wave a black light under my hood and see where its leaking.
