Key won't turn, column locked

I just had the same thing happen to my 89 pick up. I't summer in North Carolina, so it's not a frozen moisture thing. Now the column is locked. We found we could turn the key CW to the first click and no further. We also found if we turned the steering wheel real hard to the right and wiggled the key at the same time the key would finally turn and the truck start.
BTW this truck has ignition switch in the dash.
Is there a solenoid in the column, triggered by the first postion of the key, that releases a lock pin in the column?
