On the 3.0, what is the little part between the upper radiator hose and the engine? It has a gasket on it, and two bolts.



I recently had the motor replaced and they didn't use a real gasket, just some Grey goo looking stuff for it, and it leaks a tiny bit. Nothing major. But I was wanting to get a real gasket for it, but am just unsure what it is called.

Thermostat housing?

 

I believe it's the Water Outlet.

I think instead of a gasket you use FIPG (form in place gasket) or maybe silicone seal.

 

From the factory, it should have a very light coating of silicone. If someone makes a gasket, don't use it. You need to use silicone.

It already has a silicone gasket, or some kind of form in place gasket. Right behind it, on the motor, I see coolant spray, as if it's leaking.

I'm thinking of just re-doing it. Is there a specific type of silicone used?

Is there a point to the outlet?

 

The thermostat is down where the lower hose connects back to the engine.

You mean other than allowing the water to get from your engine to the radiator, and supporting the upper idler pulley for your timing belt?!? No... other than those two very important functions, it doesn't do a thing.

For the record, I like using "The Right Stuff" gasket maker by Permatex to seal the water outlet. Like mentioned before, FIPG is used there from the factory... there is no "gasket" to buy. If you remove the top half of the outlet, and clean out the old FIPG, you'll see a groove on the top section of the outlet. That's where you put your bead of gasket maker... the whole way around in that groove.

hahahah, yeah, I didn't realize a belt was connected, and I figured the water could just flow through? :p
