help!!engine is acting weired??

hey guys im new to YT and wtan to see if i can get some of your advice?....i bought a 88 yota pu 4Ccyl ,auto for $700 i bought it for a daily driver...did a complete tuen up...at first it was running good...then a week later it would start sometimes...then my fuel pump went out...i replaced it with the fuel filter...drove it to work and left me there...the engine was making a sound like it had a cam or missfiring... i checked all the vac hoses nothing they are all good...checked spark plugs they are black...i cut the front part of the cat to see maybe the cat is bad...no...same thing... do i need an engine rebuild it has over 200,000 miles...what should i check for...also when i step on the brake pedal to put it in drive it shuts off...what things should i look for??...anyone have this problem..???i was thinking of putting a sm350 with a th400 or a th350...is there any write ups on this swap???

The fact that the motor stalls when you hit the brakes makes me think that the brake booster is bad and the internal diaphragm is shot, causing a HUGE vacuum leak. Disconnect the vacuum line going to the brake booster and suck on it. It should hold perfect vacuum.

If your idle is too high, try reducing it. I read somewhere that a high idle can produce a stalling effect while braking.
