HELP 94 4runner tranny problems
I have a 1994 runner 4x4 v6 auto with 192000miles on it. Motor runs great,,doesnt smoke sputter or leak or use oil and still runs strong. The problem is the transmission, I know it leaks pretty bad,,probably front seal,,but when I first get in it and start it it wont go into gear right away unless I let it warm up first there is also a clacking/clicking noise that sounds like its in the tranny only on start up. Going down the road it doesnt want to shift into overdrive,,but after it warms up it shifts and drives great,,no slipping at all. I can drive around town all day without any problems except the leak but when I get it on the highway at cruising speeds 65 to 70mph the tranny temp light comes on and it starts slipping,,,I can let it cool down and it will drive fine again. Someone has suggested that the torque converter may be bad or the valve bodies might be bad???? Oh yeah,,at about 30 to 45mph there is a grinding noise on the right side of the floor board about where the transfer case should be. I dont want to spend a ton of money rebuilding it,,I have located a tranny and transfer case for about 750 bucks with only 60k miles. If it is something as simple as a torque converter or valve body I would rather fix that,,,,Any insight would be greatly appreciated,,,,,,,Thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,Damon

The bad news: Not good! Since it's leaking are you adding t-fluid to replace the loss? IMHO I don't think it's your TC, I'd go with the bands, they can be adjusted, but yours just sound shot! It's not cheap, either a RR Tranny or a used one! You can take it to AAMCO.. and have them pressure check it, it will tell you, it's around $50 bucks around here!
Take Care,
Harry
