Im new to the site and proud owner of a 1989 4runner I recently purchased. When I purchased the truck I noticed that the clutch made a ticking/chirping noise when the clutch is let completely out. I can lay my foot on the clutch pedal with light pressure and the noise goes away. The guy I purchased the truck off of said the clutch, pressure plate, throw out and pilot bearing had been replaced recently, I can tell someone had dropped the tranny. My first though it may be one of the bearings?? It doesnt have any problems going into or out of gear, no grinds, and no noises while driving, it only makes it when your setting still and no pressure is being applied to the clutch. Any help will much appreciated. Thanks!!

is the clutch free play adjustment correct?

you should be able to track down the exact location of the noise, since it's repeatable... maybe start by looking under the dash.

while you are down there, check to make sure that the clutch pedal bracket isn't cracked... it's common in these trucks.

 

the noise is coming from the transmission even tho I do have a sqeaky pedal. Idk if something wasnt lined up correctly when the clutch was replaced or what, when i apply light pressure to the pedal the noise from the transmission stops and when i release the pedal i hear a knocking/ticking noise coming from the tranny.

 

Maybe it's the pedal assembly? Check for cracks and possible warpage.

 

you could try pulling the rubber boot on the throwout bearing arm back a bit... shine a flashlight in there.

the arm rotates on a ball, and it's held in on the ball with some weird spring assembly... i wonder if the spring fell off?

 

i bled the clutch which didnt help, checked the pedal assembly and everthing seemed to check out, no cracks, i could see a spring of somesort which was still on the arm that entered the tranny, may have to drop the tranny to see whats goin on, or just wait til it breaks then fix it lol

 

couldnt see any cracks on the assembly, so i ended up bleeding the clutch, which didnt help, may end up dropping the tranny or waiting til something breaks before fixing lol

I think it's the shift fork lightly contactng the throwout bearing. The throwout bearing is made up of two cylindrical sections, separated by a roller or ball thrust bearing. One section contacts the shift fork (which doesn't rotate), and the other side contacts the clutch fingers, which do rotate. If the bearing is a bit stiff, when the fork makes light contact, there isn't enough friction from the fork to cause the throwout bearing to spin normally, so the fork rubs on the bearing surface and sqeaks. Once you apply more force, the friction of the fork is sufficient to overcome the stiffness of the bearing and stop the fork side. At this point the bearing operates normally and the squeaking stops.

It's not a critical issue, but it is annoying. You can improve the situation by adjusting the clutch for a bit more free play so the fork doesn't rub when the clutch is fully engaged. The only permanent fix is to pull the tranny and replace the bearing.

 

Just a thought?
I have found alot of times people don't replace the pilot bearing cause they can be a Bear sometimes. Worn ones with no torque on it to speak of tend to wobble whereas when its got pressure on it you don't notice it as much 'til it becomes much worse.
