Hella E-codes
So, after spending the past two years with $5.99 sealed beam candle lights for headlights it was time to upgrade. My buddy Jason (green93) mentioned he was gonna order a set of Hella E-codes. They are h4 style so you can replace the bulbs if they burn out, or if you want to upgrade to a better bulb So I decided it was time to upgrade!
I got the 80/100w H4 Hella Xeon blue ( I can't remember the real name....) bulbs. After shipping up to canada it came to about 130 bucks. I also got a fuse box to help clean up my wiring. I forgot to get a relay box though.... damn.
I went over to Jasons and we installed them (he having installed his a few nights prior). The difference... my god! And the fact that they are not even aimed correctly and they are still 1000x10 better then my old lights.
This is a great mod, if you need to replace your headlight, I would just go with the e-codes. The lights didnt fit AS well as the stocker replacements, but they still mount no problems, just tight.
Here are some pictures, clink on the link if you wanna see a bigger picture, they are not the best quality .

You'll love them even more once you get them aimed... i got the Bosch e-codes at CT a few years ago for $90 for the set... the e-code focused light pattern makes so much more sense then the crazy all over pattern on the DOT code version.

We had it shipped to Jasons shipping place in blane washington. Then his friend picked them up for us. Il get the exact numbers for you though
I know eh, the pattern is beautiful! I love the cutoff of the e-codes I would do this again in a heatbeat.

The E Code design is not what's improving the lighting...it's the design of the reflector/lens/optical system in general. I've had the Hella DOT(not E Code) lights and they were just as good as the E's. The E Codes just don't blind the oncoming drivers quite as badly as the DOTs.

Both my GE Nighthawk headlights burned out again. They last about 2 months with DTRLs. The output is great, but $40/mo for head lights is way too much. THinking about upgrading to E-Codes.

Matt you'll love them... you may be able to get the Bosch e-code kit for less money than the Hellas if you can find them anymore... I'll see if I can get a product code for you...
The DTRLs would'nt make a difference to the life of the bulb [in the grand scheme of things] maybe there are other issues in the lighting circuit that need looking at... maybe if you were to try one of the "headlight wiring mods" there are a few threads on the topic but I forget their titles just now... basically you wire the lights straight off the batt. with some 10AWG wire and use the factory harness as a switch thru a relay... it is supposed to boost headlight output by removing resistance caused by the small gauge factory wiring...

Hey Matt, defatntly go with e-codes. A friend of mine got his through lordco! exact same pattern as mine. My passenger side lense has a fat crack in it, I guess a rock hit it. Gonna see about getting a replacement from lordco...
Only 2 months on the GE nighthawks eh? That sucks balls!!

I run Hella H4 (72200), available from Lordco in every vehicle that fits them.
If you're curious about light output, stop by my place in the evening and take my truck around the block to see for yourself.
My truck has two headlight relays and the original Hella bulbs that come with the kit (55/60w) and is quite bright. If/when these burn out, I may replace them with 80/100w bulbs, but in the meantime I drive around with much less of a heatscore on my truck.
Because it's relayed with two relays, my low beams stay on when I toggle the high beams for much more output than stock. Also, relays typically bump the brightness of normal bulbs by over 30% simply by reducing resistance in the wires. Shorter fatter wires that don't run through the switch = more available voltage and current.
Stock low beams = 110w
stock high beams = 120w
relayed stock wattage bulbs:
low beams = 150w equivilant
high beams = 300+w equivilant
relayed 80/100w bulbs:
low beams = 200w equivilant
high beams = 500w equivilant (but you must NOT use your high beams unless your vehicle is moving, otherwise you'll melt something)
Try it, you will like it.
