Heater Problem

The previous owner of my '94 pickup must have disconnected or broke something. The lever that directs the air flow to the different vents does nothing. It seems to be stuck on vent/feet, and will not go to any other setting.

What is it most likely?

Easy to fix, can I tackle it in an hour tomorrow?

They are all mechanical links that go directly to the main heater box (the only directly behind the lever). The only real way to take a look is to get the facia off, im pretty sure you cannot get to them otherwise. When you say stuck do you mean it is jammed or just when it is moved it does nothing? If it moves but does nothing I would suggest these mechanical links have been disconnected...is there any resistance in the lever at all, or does it slide freely?

could be a couple things, but it is all mechanical cables.

first check the sliding controls behind the dash. pull the dash face apart for access and see if you can see any binding at the sliders. a little lube in here while you're there.

then check the cables. if they're kinked, reroute them to a better path. sometimes an accessory install can shove them to where they'll kink, or come off the lever controls.

follow the cables to the blower box and see if any of the flap doors are jammed or broken. a hinge can snap and the door is then stuck.

occasionally a cable end will come off, but usually its something jamming the flap door itself or a cable kink. good luck!

I can slide the control lever back and forth, with normal resistance, but it does nothing to dedirect the flow of air.

Thanks for the heads-up guys! Guess I'll have to start fishin around.

Same problem with my '89 4Runner. Whatever connects to my vent lever has come free. I keep putting it off because I dread pulling the dash. Let me know how much trouble it was for you, and I'd love to see a few pics.

another thread about similar happening now. replaced the control unit on my son's 884runner without much issue. the cables pretty much point to where they need to go, you just have to figure out what they are pointing to. the ends of the cables have a little curl to them making an "O" for you to slip on whatever it needs to slip on to. the worst part is breaking your back to get your eyeballs to be able to see under the dash etc.

EDIT: here's the other thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116.../#post52002740 Terry just posted some excellent info in post #6.
