Headlights dim for fraction of a second

when I brake, when I turn on a turn signal, when I shift into reverse...

This just started overnight. The headlights dim noticeably for just a fraction of a second, then return to normal. Not a huge problem, but it's annoying and the fact that it just started doing this means that something's off. Battery is only a few months old and tests strong, and the alternator is charging according to my tester. Any thoughts on what to check?

First thing look for a loose belt or corroded battery terminals.

Colder Temps will cause charging issues.

Another thing to check is the wire coming off the B terminal of the alternator they get old and brittle and strands start to break.


I would maybe upgrade your ground cables if it has never been done.

Get much Snow I drag so much onto the floor it can`t help but get into the fuse block

Been kicking the fuse block I do with my big feet once in a while I will have electrical problems.

Seeing that you have aftermarket fog lights, might want to double check that wiring for problem areas.

Mine does what you describing only when I shift to reverse. My volt meter drops for a split second. When one of them goes out I'm replacing them with LEDs

Yeah, check connections. I just went through something similar and it was a bad connection at the + battery terminal.

The volt meter moving isn't necessary a problem. Might ticks back and forth with my blinkers on or when turning on/off headlights but it does not affect anything else.

True, I didn't say it was a problem, just saying mine had similar symptoms as the OP's vehicle. Normal when you increase or decrease the load on the electrical system

All my issues of dimming lights, dancing voltmeter and other issues (windows going up deadly slow) went away the second i started my truck after doing the "BIG THREE", but I did 3 more 8ga. grounds to motor, trans, frame. 4ga for the other 3. I used welding wire from tractor supply. Good price and pure copper, not copper clad aluminum.
