headlight improvement

Is it possible to clean out the headlamp housing instead of replacing the whole unit? (this is the replaceable bulb style - 93 T100) The housing is fine, but looks a little dirty on the inside of the lens. I'm looking into replacing the harness with the 4crawler one, if the voltage is low at the lamp, but first I want a clean housing.

You might give it a try, nothing too harsh that would damage the reflector surface.

I just cleaned out the tail light housings on my daily driver (full of mold and dirt) and that made a huge improvement in the backup light output. This was a housing w/ removeable lens.

can you separate the lens from the unit without messing up the headlight alignment? or do I have to remove the whole unit and fill it with soapy water....I haven't got a clue here.

i dont think the alignment is based on the lens being attached to the housing but rather the housing being attached to the body. as far as filling it with soapy water, i'd recommend not doing that. i did that (well, just water) to get all the shavings out from my turn signal relocation and it was a bad idea. not only did it not get the shavings out but it took forever to get the water out and some of it left marks. i guess you can use soft or distilled water for that. i hear you can heat the unit in the oven and separate the housing. i dont know anything about putting it back together...

I know its a long shot, but would it be possible to remove the lense itself and paint the inside reflective background stuff with some sort of metallic black. I think it would looks pretty cool but dont know how well it would work. They sell headlights like that for the 3rd gens, so why not be able to make them for the 2nd gen?

Wanna know what will make it shine like gold? Take it apart and use rubbing compound!

I think the reflective surface is ok, it just looks like a film of dirt on the inside of the lens. This is my dad's truck, and I don't have access to it right now, but I'm wondering if you can remove the whole housing without impacting the alignment or do the fasteners to the body also control alignment???

You might try this... take out the light bulb and using a small detailing polishing ball sprayed with a little Plexus inserted through the hole run a low speed on the end of a drill. this will clean and polish the inside of the housing without you having to remove it from the vehicle. (Though you may have to remove the aircleaner box and battery to get access to these areas) You should also use the Plexus to clean and polish the outside of the headlamps as well at this time.
Plexus is a product designed for the aviation industry to clean and protect aircraft windshields. It works exceptionally well at removing the "yellowing" from clear plastics. It can also help the flexible plastics on soft tops retain their flexibility. You can find it at most FBOs or AMOs (at the airport) or you can buy it online from www.aircraftspruce.com

I have always used mother's metal polish, I used to own a couple of DSM's and they would always get cloudy headlights, rub it on the outside of the headlight, works like a champ.

on the plastic dont use anything like glas cleaner...just use a soft towl on the reflector and wipe gently and as little as possible. theres lots of write ups online about splitting headlights to smoke them. Fallow those to split em clean them and reseal em.

With my 95 I removed the grille, then the headlights. I then filled them with Windex, water and alcohol, shook the crap out of em', drained em' and let them dry in the sun all day. They still are not perfect, but a lot better.
