nice thread, put in my two cents... i have 8k on rebuild that i did. i used engnbldr gasket kit, timing chain, cover, new head bolts, tensioner and rails. I tourqued according to the fsm BUT... i already had the timing cover on the engine and tourqued, which could have something to do with the oil leak at the front of the head and timing cover. other than that its ok, however on my 4runner build i plan on using oe head gasket even though im a cheap sob. i still plan on using engnbldr parts otherwise beacause theyre price is right for me. if i had the cash damn right id go factory parts but id never get anywhere cause i cant afford it. as far as reusing head bolts i was always told to replace with new ones which is how ive done. i also agree clean and dry on the head gasket and some oil on threads of head bolts prior to assembly. im by far not as experienced as some of you guys with 22r 22re engines, but i love the simplicity of them and theyre reliabilty. I will own these rigs for as long as i live or they live. ill take a toyota over a jeep any day of the week!!!!

 

I have around 2K on my rebuild now, I used Hastings nodular iron rings and a Beck/Arnley factory type Made In Japan head gasket that I got from a local Toyota service shop. I have no leaks and it is not using oil. I torqued all the bolts in the engine according to the factory specs. It runs very well. I am crossing my fingers that the oil consumption issue doesn't happen. Also I used King bearings made in Israel.

 

My kit only lasted 11k before things got serious. Had to redo everything since I had a trifecta of leaks.

This time I went with 22reperformance which included the OEM head gasket in their kit. On top of that I am now using ARP head bolts which require 90lbs of torque. Unfortunately I used the same head bolts for the first rebuild and I do not recommend that cork oil pan gasket that comes with a lot of kits out there.

I pray I will not have a head, timing cover and/or oil pan leak again!

90lbs Wow, I wouldn't have thought the torque would be that much different from stock.

 

Same here!!! I was surprised as well when I saw that number.

They are the experts though

Hmmmm, I just did an 900 mile round trip over the weekend.

Well, Yotatech will be the first to know if something go BOOM.

 

I have approximately 4800 miles now on my rebuild. Had to replace the oil pan gasket with FIPG and replace the oil pump gasket. Other than that it is running well and it is not using or burning oil.
