Question head lights go off while driving

Okay I'm new here but I did a search first with nothing about my problem, so here goes. I just got my 87 4Runner and the other day I was driving (at night) and the lights cut out but the high beam indicator came on. I wasn't scared because I was on a surface road but I really don't want it to happen on the freeway. Oh not to mention the fact that people will think I am signaling them. It happened again the same night and I just pulled back to "flash" the high beams then let go and the regular lights came back on. Has anyone ever had this problem? Where should I start to fix this? Thanks in advance.

I've had the same thing happen to me before when I'm switching from low to high beams. Pretty scary when you're expecting them to get brighter and they just go dark. It doesn't happen every time, just occasionally. Maybe some one will chime in with a suggestion.

Maybe change your bulbs. The bulbs' high beam filament may be out of whack... I don't think the high beam indicator would go on if the wiring was bad.

I have two new headlights so I don't think it's the filament. I'm starting to lean more toward the wiring or a relay as causing my problem. My high beam indicator doesn't come on, but I guess sdstud212001's does. Thanks for the suggestion, though. It might be sdstud212001's problem if his lights aren't new.

Yeah my headlights are not new or anything, I have to agree with Tiger Paw I think it's electrical. Why else would the Hight Beam indicator come on when the Lows go off?

Thanks Buck01 I would have never found that. Yeah I think I will have to do that, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that but at least with that thread I might not have to buy a whole new lighting control. thanks again

Thanks for the link! I've been to Roger's site a million times, but I never noticed that section. I guess it was because I was never interested in upgrading my headlight wiring, etc. I should have known he had a cure for our problem. Roger for President!!!
