22re when to shift?
Ok, i have a 22re 1st gen with no tach. My trany is getting so loud it is hard to hear the engine wine like I used to , so my question is at what speed do guys shift? i am running all stock and 30in tires. I usually shift out of 1st as soon as possible, because it does not seem to want to go above 12 or 13 mph in first, then second I use as much as possible if I am in a parking lot, because 1st is REALLY REALLY jumpy so i look like an idiot. Third is smooth, but LOUD. And poor 4th gets used 90% of my driving because it is smooth and still nice a quiet...ish. I rarely use 5th as I don't do lots of highway driving and it is so loud I would have to yell to have a conversation.

I usually shift from 1st to 2nd around 10-15, into 3rd about 35, 4th about 50, and 5th about 60. I like to use alot of 3rd gear.

sometimes it's good to know what your axle ratio's are...if nothing else, so that you can better choose what tire diameter to run.
axle ratio table
I'd recommend getting a tach though - aftermarket or start shopping for an SR5 cluster & swap 'em.

I always wind up first a little more than the others, it seems to keep the power up in the rest of the gears, especially if you're going to get on the interstate. I also say getting a tach would be best bet.

do 'er by ear. she'll tell you when she's ready for the next gear. but me and tiger paw got the same idea. except i usually don't hit 5th till like 55, 60, otherwise she bogs down. i got the 22r.

It depends more on the conditions than the speed. If there is a downhill stretch, I sometimes skip 3rd and do a 2-4 shift. It makes all the difference if it is uphill, downhill, level, etc as to where I shift.

I run mine hot, plus with the cam she's got a bit more power, I can hit 2nd between 20-25, 3rd @ 45, 4th @ 50-55, and 5th whenever I'm ready to coast. But if I need to I have room to run 3rd to like 60. I used to be much more conservative. Wouldn't downshift into 4th until I was under 55. But with the cam... damn I got power everywhere.

so is there a speed that is too fast for 4th, i mean under like 70? becuase i have a hard time accelerating in 5th so is it bad to shift into 4th going 60? how about 3rd? what is the fastest you would go in third? how easy is it to damage my engine by not shifting? and is it bad for anything to be shifting too early and bogging down?

Well my 88 runner 22re 5speed runs about 2600 rpm at 55 or 60 in 4th gear, so I think fourth will take you will into the 70's before it would redline or anything.
If you let it bog down too much it can cause pre-ignition which is never a good thing.
If you're really having trouble getting pull in 5th gear, you could try advancing your timing a few degrees. I did that one mine, and I found that when climbing incline to Lookout Mountain in 3rd gear, floored, the truck would hold about 42 mph rather than the usual 37

the only way you could redline a stock truck on the freeway is get it going as fast as you can in 3rd gear -- you'll never hit 5500RPMs in 4th or 5th.
i actually drive a little better when i don't watch my tach, i tend to keep the revs up a little more.
