You know all of this gauge jumping with the temp gauge, has got me to thinking, on a warm start say after like 15 minutes sitting it's funny that the gauge doesn't spike or at least go up higher than normal because of heat soak, I guess the 22r series isn't prone to it? I know BMW specifically the M30 engine has that problem. Although have yet to experience it with mine.

From: Bryan Tx,
I know that another member I recomended this too drilled a single 3/16" hole and it cured his problem. Some people say to drill a small hole and try it, if it still gets warm drill another and so on. I say just drill a single 3/16" hole and be done with it.

Ok, this is what I found...I think the new stat I had was bad. Soooo Sat I changed oil, drilled out the old stat 3/16", changed plugs-wires and found out the cap was shot so changed that as well.

The old cap was really corroded and the plugs were not the best. So now the tach does not jump about, the idle is perfect, and the miss is gone. So the old girl was running strong again!!!

The only issue is/was that the truck would not warm up. Soooo back to Advanced Auto for a stat, this time I installed a 180 instead of the 190...Now she does warm up but just past the line a little cooler than I like. This is why I'm thinking the old stat was garbage.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Ok, so we have a Bud Light to add to the list!

from 4crawlers site: "I have heard you can also drill a small hole (1/16" or so) in the base of the thermostat flange and get a similar effect."

I think that 3/16" hole was a little too big. Which is probably why it wouldn't warm up, but if you got it licked now, it's all good.

lumpy, just a note for you. When i rebuilt my last motor,(22re) i had problems with the t-stat (or so i thought) The truck would barely pass the cold mark on the gauge. I put in another t-stat and with the higher temp rating it would move up a little. The heat would blow strong and warm and the truck seemed to idle and run fine but the gauge never worked properly. I finally borrowed a temp gun and found that even though the gauge said one thing the truck was running perfect temp wise even a little warmer than normal due to the higher rated t-stat. Moral of the story, Get a temp gun and find out what your rig is really running at as the gauge could be faulty. Then again i haven't read the whole thread so you might have covered this already.

have you had the head checked for flatness? I would. Maybe had something to do with your t-stat problems?

I really just don't understand...I have to get it to the folks again later today. I can't let it sit outside too cold and there is no anti-freeze left in it. I'll order a kit from Ted again tomorrow and tear into it on Sat...again. I'm not happy at all!

I suppose it's possible...unlikely yes but possible. It all looked good though!

I'm wondering if the combination of almost overheating for a while and a higher pressure cap lead to this? I'm going to change rads to the reg Toyota and use the 13lb cap rather than the Mopar 18lb I have now.
