head/block resurfacing recommendations?

So I've got the block and head scraped down with carb cleaner and a razor blade. Buddy of mine said they used emery cloth from there and smoothed er off. Boys at the shop said take it and get er resurfaced at the machine shop.

Has anyone done it on their own with any success? if so, how?

If its uneven or was ever overheated then take it to a machine shop and have them resurface it. Otherwise I have had really good luck with gasket remover and the green scotch-brite pads to clean my old head gasket off my civic.

Really,

you mean there is a chemical gaskt remover that I should buy instead of using carb cleaner?

My machine shop guy said to clean everything off the deck, and if I was going to use a rough green pad, to be careful. DO NOT use a pneumatic wheel like a welders prep pad. He said people bring in screwed blocks all the time after this.

A nice sharp hand scraper and a 3M scotch pad by hand has always worked well for me. As previously stated, if the engine has been overheated, have it checked and shaved at the machine shop.

I got some medium scotch brite pads, and I'm going to go at it very carefully.

Got some nice steel straight edges from the office to check the head and block for straightness.

Should I always have the head pressure tested at this point or can I check it myself well enough with some dye?

Cool

I use a scraper + acetone on the tough crap.
If the block is really bad, afterwards I'll take a big sheet of glass & some 800-1000 wet-dry sand paper to it & work in the same direction using it wet w' car shampoo.

Then clean all that off with whatever.
