Hello,
My truck is having a bit of a problem.
22re. 93 xtra cab. DLX. 4.56 junk yard rear diff put in on sunday.
Whenever it seems to rain for an extended amount of time (all day at work or overnight). My truck is hard to start. It acts like it's not getting any fuel.
When I pulled away, it started to hesitate. It was fine with the clutch in but it's having a hard time getting going.
The hesitation part could be from my garbage rear diff. I put in a PnP diff and the front bearing is leaking and it has a pretty good vibration problem.

I was wondering what would cause the hard start and/or the hesitation and if they are related or not.

Wish me luck getting home, gotta make it back home from work.

are you 90% sure its only when it rains? if soo you may be getting water into the fuel tank from your gas cap either not being tight or bad seal. whats the condition of your air intake hose? is it cracked and or in place for water to get in? is it throwing any codes? Possible distributor getting wet inside check seal and or get new one. also your spark plug wires may be old and possible pin hole cracks shoting out to moisture from rain? same with the coil.

This has only ever happened in the rain. I hadn't driven at all in the rain. It only happens when it just sits in the rain for a while (work day or overnight).
No codes, just needs to be cranked for a about 15-20 seconds then it starts.

My 3.0 acts up also when it is exposed to long periods of rain. It flat out just won't start at all. Doesn't even try, just turns over all day long. I suspect it is a combo of original 15 yr old wires with 218K and maybe some moisture in the rotor/cap? I'll get to it one of these paychecks...or when I get tired of being stranded in the rain.

i can tell you, for almost certain, that the rear dif, altho junk, will not cause you hesitation unless its missing SEVERAL ring gear teeth...
i should know...

and even with 2 or 3 pinion teeth dang near sheared off it didnt have ANY hesitation...
but it did whine and vibrate pretty badly...
id get that fixed ASAP lest you want to buy another new one...

Vibration part got sort of figured out. Checked the diff, the axle bolts were loose. Torqued 'em down good, no more vibration. I only did about 25 km this morning, speed up 90 km/h. Seems fine (*knocks on wood*). Front seal is still leaking.

I'm guessing that it could be from the large hole in my passenger side front fender. The ECU is right there and a large amount of wiring goes through the firewall on that side, just behind the fender. I'm guessing it gets a little bit of moisture in there when it rains.

for the hesatation i would get some dieaelectric grease and put it on the both ends of the plug wires and sparkplugs and put some on the disy cap where it seals to the bottom and that should help out a good bit if not get some water remover for your gas and try that

Well look at that! Coming from canada, you'd think I'd know about that stuff...

As far as my diff, I checked the diff breather. I was full of gunk and sealed shut. A little bath in the solvent tank and the scotch bright pad. She works great now. Less dripping but still got some. It might be the O-ring on the bottom plug. I dunno.

As far as the sputtering, I just stuffed some bubble wrap in the gapping hole in my fender when it was raining and I didn't have a problem. So I think the sooner I get some fiberglass fenders, the better.
