hard to start
hey guys,
here lately my truck has had a real problem starting. I have to turn the key for at least 30 seconds before it finally starts, then it doesnt want to stay runing. after it gets warm though its fine, but if it sits for any longer than about 10 minutes it does the same thing on start up. do our trucks have a automatic choke that has gone out on mine, or whats going on here?
thanks in advance

Is the truck EfI or carb'd?If it is fuel injected I'd check the cold start injector ,injector time switch and coolant temp. sensor ,check the wiring also . I don't know anything about carbs. ..I sure someone else that reply's to the thread will. It would probably be a good idea to check for codes.
When my truck did this, I ended up replacing the main relay . .. Just a thought.

sounds like it could be a bad check valve in the pump, or a fuel pressure regulator, maybe even a leaky injector or more. sounds like your fuel pressure is bleeding off after the car sits. when it starts does it missfire? easy way to check the regulator is to clamp off the fuel return hose, shut the vehicle off. let it sit and then see if it fires up, if not then id look elsewhere

I would check the cold start injector first. Sounds exactly like the issue. New cold start injector is ~120 bucks @ kragen.com and get the printout (free)+ washers/seals (dirt cheap) from the dealership. Tell them your replacing the cold start and would like the print out and washers, itll be less than 10 bucks.

A quick check of the cold start injector is quick enough, undo the bolts when its cold and have someone turn over the key, should spray. Its sounds like since its doing it like 10 minutes after shutdown too that your fuel pressure is bleeding off and having to reprime the whole fuel system. Cracking the fuel line @ any fitting after it sits for 10 minutes should spray out fuel, if not, its bleeding down and your on the hunt
