Well, okay..........since the noise appears when it's also stationary, you should put a stethoscope or long screwdriver (handle end to your ear) on different areas of the motor when the grinding is present. And, is it really a grinding, and can you give an example of what is kind of sounds like?

Tank capacity is like 17-18gal. Actually not really sure on that, though.

 

well it sounds to be coming from maybe the drive shaft? i can hear the noise in my cab, and sounds like its under or somewhere below the shifter, and im not really sure on how else to describe the noise. its probably not as bad as a grinding noise but something similiar

Clutch in or out would help isolate the trans from the engine too.

Is the driveshaft not bolted on tight and vibrating with the higher rpms? Just a thought. Look for anything that could be loose really.

 

I don't know much about how or where you drive your truck but I rarely exceeed 4000 rpm's unless I'm struggling to hold speed up a hill on the Interstate.
Maybe the grinding or rattle is related to bushings, engine mounts, even the transmission input shaft (you didn't say if it was quiet with the clutch depressed like I asked, only "the noise happens when its in or out of gear, around the same rpm" In or out of gear doesn't mean you had your foot on the clutch or not).
As well, could be the fan clutch, alternator or just about anything that is subject to those high RPM's.
