Goofed on a Head Gasket replacement

So I'm finishing up a full rebuild of my 22re out of my 87 4runner. But I goofed when putting the head on tonight. I forgot the spacer/dowels that go under the one side of the rocker assembly and torqued the whole thing down. Then when I realized, I had to undo it all and then retorque it. I never lifted the head up off and am wondering if I need to go get a new gasket now or will I be alright. Also, will the head bolts be ok. It was seriously only torqued down for like 5 minutes.

Only reason that I'm not immediately playing it safe and ordering at least a new gasket from engnbldr is I need this project finished real soon...kinda running out of time. I guess I could just fork up the money and go get one from toyota...but not if its not necessary.

as long as you did not move the head or break the seal you should be just fine

head bolts will be fine. the length should be 6.417 from bottom to under the head. 6.417 is 6 3/8" The head bolts are not a torque to yield type of construction so no stretching of the bolts occurs during torque. Me personally wouldnt reuse the head gasket. Felpro from advance auto is the oem and 25 bucks.

I'd say you should be fine. the head didnt move, didn't heat up from the engine moving, so there should be no impressions or warpage.

while i may be fine...i guess it is wise advice to go ahead an replace it...if the felpro gasket from napa or advanced auto will work. I'd rather try my luck with the one on it than pay the 60$ for one from toyota.

How well do the felpro ones work?

I got a felpro one when I did the headgasket. they seem to do good, and I havent had any issues yet, though the headgasket was only done about 6 months ago and about 4000 miles ago

FEL-PRO is some sort of standard among the guys, that I talked to, who wrench for a living.

They come highly recommended; so I use them. They are a solid product. They do not disappoint.

So I was at Advanced auto and thought I'd at least check out the "new design" Felpro. Probably would work ...but definitely less quality than Rock Gaskets...wish I wasn't such a perfectionist and just left well enough alone. I'll be grabbing a Toyota one tomorrow...hopefully one of the dealers has it in stock.

I would disagree. Unless the OEM is a Fel-pro then I would not use them. Teds are much better.

I vote re-use both as long as motor hasnt been fired. Now......

Hi-Jack

I just got a "Rock Gasket" from Engnbldr in the master rebuild kit. Anyone used this gasket? I was considering forking over the extra $48 for a factory one just to be safe.... Then again money is hella tight.....

What do you guys think?

Rock gaskets are adequate, not "top of the line." However, they do work, at least for the 22R-E. Mine has had a Rock head gasket for ~30,000 now.

Felpro gaskets are generally good. The 3VZE crowd would say otherwise, but 3VZEs need a miracle to hold the head gaskets anyway.

I think i'm gonna go with it. I mean i am using literally EVERYTHING else he sells basically.020 over pistons & rings, t-cover, oil & H20 pumps, gaksets, O/S Valves, 268 Torkr Cam, ect, ect...

the $48 is half of my injector rebuild I need from http://www.witchhunter.com which i'm going to consider manditory with my complete rebuild.
