Good question for you toyota guys!
I have a 94 toy pickup with the famous 22re. I put a new engine in it less that 3 months ago and have been having problems ever since. I drove it for the break in process (500 miles) and it threw a check engine light. So I got the code and it was the EGR code. I took it to the toyota dealer here in town and they told me that the EGR is good it just doesent want to close. What sould I do? Also the truck has been pinging with the timing at 5* with the jumper. Even with high octane gas. Old owner cut the cat out and installed a flowmaster. Any Ideas on what is going on here. All info will help a bunch. Thanks guys
Mabye fuel injectors?
EGR?
o2 sensors?
Im running ngk R plugs dont know if there to hot or what?

I don't think it would be the sensor!
It sounds like the egr is bad since it is not closing,
It could be the sensor, but i thought the sensor was more for having the egr open.
Does the EGR close at all, even when the truck is off? Or is it stuck open?

dont get used sensors...waste of money i know...just get a new one.. i bet it fixes the problem
and yes the egr should open and close freely..it depends on how much vacume the enigne makes...the higher the rmps the more vacume, the more egr opens..so if it's stuck all the way open it's not following the correct amount of exhaust gas at lower rpms

One way to test it is to pull a vacuum hose off near the egr. One that has suction. Then take the top hose off the egr and stick the other vaccuum hose on it. If its working, the vaccuum from the line will make the egr open and the engine should stumble.

Its up to you!
Yea i made the mistake of buying a used sensor(didn't work) till i figured out how to bypass the sensor!

I ended up going to NAPA and getting an actual TOYOTA Egr valve for $75 bucks. It turned out i didn't need it.
You could buy an egr valve, reset the code and drive it around and if the CEL doesn't come back on then the egr was the problem, if it does come back on, then you could replace the sensor, and repeat the process.
That is of course, if you have money to spend
