going to replace head gasket

So I am going to replace my HG on the 89runner 22-re.IT was done recently by the previous owner. He had the head machined and put he new HG in himself. Now it is blowing white smoke and losing coolant after only less than 1 year of use. What would cause the hg to go again and what things are important to do so this doesn't happen again.Thanks.

if he used a generic felpro type head gasket, it could be just bad luck. these gaskets don't work well on our engines unless the finish on both the block and head are perfect. toyota's gaskets(as well as rock and some others) employ a steel slip plate on the head side that allows the head to expand freely without harming the gasket. much more forgiving, if a couple bucks more.

I know he reused the head bolts(crap) and did get the head machined,so I am going to get the hg from toyota as well as new bolts and hope that it solves it.

the head bolts are reusable on a 22R engine, but i definitely wouldn't hesitate to replace them if they were pitted or in bad shape otherwise.
