well i got a starting issue fixed, however now the truck will try to start with no keys, if both battery terminals are connected, it has a new starter and a new battery its an 89 4runner 22re, 4x4 5spd.

Sounds like a relay to me. I'd check the starter relay.


BTW - Which springs are you in? Idaho, Colorado, or Pagosa?

Yeah that would probably only be avalible at the dealer. Don't know where is it either but try looking in the fuse box under the hood maybe.

Are you saying that your truck just starts itself with turning the key? Is this a come and go thing or all the time?

 

but It turns over but wont start, with both battery terminals connected, it just started to happen, after i replaced the starter. Right now i have a terminal disconnected to keep it from trying, but it still wont catch, would that deal with timing? the starter and battery are new, and the alternator has low miles.
the relay itself has no continuity, based off of the FSM

Try a "pull it yourself" yard.

The starter relay will look like a small box about the size of a D-cell battery. It should be located under the hood with your EFI, headlight, and other fuses in the box. The fuse box cover should have a diagram with one of the larger items labeled "starter".

EDIT: I might even have a relay on my '83 that should fit.

EDIT #2: Nevermind. I just noticed you have an arrow pointing to your avatar saying "sold" and I read you now have an '89. I think they have a different relay.

 

goodluck finding a yota at a junkyard? Are the relays the same on other toyota vehicles?

The dealer wanted just under 200 for the relay.

 

that relay and what the dealer is selling are two COMPLETELY different things. Be 100% sure you compare that relay to your old one, so you know its exact before you leave the store.

 

oh i will i know its not a fuse, like some have told me, its a separate module.

Look at your wire connections on the starter, it sounds like you may have the battery cable tightened up against the solenoid post on the starter.

That's why it will crank when you touch the battery cable to the battery.

The cable end should touch nothing but the post it mounts to.

 

If you just put the new starter in, only one of two things could be wrong:

1) The battery hot lead to the starter is touching the relay terminal.

-OR-

2) The starter you bought is bad, and has an internal short in the relay or the starter itself.

I know it's a pain to pull the starter again. But, if you can't find the #1 problem above, you will have to pull it and take it back to the store to have them test it.
