Generation Clarity

Hello, I have a 1993 Toyota Ext. Cab SR5 Pickup. I always read that this truck was a fifth generation pickup. However the title of this forum reads 2nd/3rd gen pickups? Am I misinformed or missing some info? I'm asking because when I look for parts it's good info to have. On another topic I'm looking for a replacement for my windshield washer reservoir cap. Mine has become brittle and cracked. I keep reading on listings there were 3 different sizes of that cap for the same year truck. With calipers my old cap measures 2.25 across the inside lip. I found a listing that read the largest cap measures 2.16 which of course doesn't make sense in my case. I know this is a very minor part but I love my truck and just trying to keep it fit no matter how minor. Any information on either the generation or the cap replacement would be much appreciated.
Thanks all..........

I’m also confused but never put much thought into it, got this from the web which kinda
makes sense sorta, saying the gens differed from when they started 4x4’s??

As far as the US goes:

1st gen: 68-72 2nd gen: 72-78 3rd gen: 78-83, this is the first gen that had 4x4 4rh gen: 84-88 5th gen: 89-95/97, this was the last gen for the US. It was produced globally through 1997 but stopped in the us mkt in 95

Part of the problem is Toyota’s loose naming convention for the platform in the US and how often they changed the name from Hilux to Truck to Pickup Truck to Pickup, etc. Apparently people didn’t really consider previous gens until they offered 4x4 during the third generation (which is stupid because it’s not like those previous generations didn’t exist).

Anyway I’m sure someone will chime in for clarity on how they list here or just in general, so yea I’m still confused

I do see a bunch of new caps on eBay though mine is also a bit tattered just haven’t got around to ordering yet

Thanks for the reply. My truck is a 4x4. It also was one of the Japan made trucks. If I have the correct info Toyota made the truck in Japan and USA. I got the 5th generation info from Wiki. So hopefully someone clears that up for us. As far as the caps on Ebay, I've went through all I could find and none of them seem to measure the same as mine. I'm the 2nd owner and maybe the original owner replaced that reservoir ? I don't think so but who knows? If you have a set of calipers measure across the inside lip of the cap. If it measures 2.16 you're in luck. Good luck with your truck. Cheers...........

If you look up your parts on Amayama and input not only your VIN but your model code, you will find the correct part number. If there is still more than one option, it is usually the build date that determines which one you have. Partsouq is supposed to be even better but I haven't tried it yet. TOYODIY might also tell you.

The generations are confusing because you have different world markets in the mix. For the 4 x 4's in the U.S. market, 79-83 is considered the 1st gen pickups. 84-88 is 2nd gen for pickups but 1st gen for 4Runners and they go to 89. 89- 95 I "think for the 3rd gen pickups. This is just "based on" how Marlin Crawler and others defined it I guess. Including the forums. As far as "official" generations, I couldn't tell you.

Good luck with your truck!

generations are kinda up for individual interpretations. sort of like "stage 2" buzz words.

Calling it a 5th gen is correct because it is the 5th generation of ALL toyota pickups.

Calling it a 3rd gen is also correct, because it is the 3rd generation of FOUR WHEEL DRIVE toyota pickps.

Generations can also be specific to certain regions, as different countries get different models of truck.
