Currently working with a 1988 P/U 4x4 IFS. has some 31-10.50x15's, and i'd really like to get my truck back to stock gearing again. im sure the r/p's are the same as the day they came off the car lot, so what would be a desired ratio now?? 4.11's, 4.37's??......and at the same time, where do alot of you guys buy your gearing, or any major parts from?? i need to locate some vendors to start buying stuff from. Thanks in advance!

 

How big do you eventually want to go. If 31s are it than I would go 4.56.

Chances are that it has the stock 4:10s in it. That meant that it stock had 28 inch tires. So 28/31 = .9 so you are about 10% low on the gear. 4:10 * 10% is 4:51. So the closes size if you keep the 31's is 4:56. But you also have to take into account that the tires have more mass. I would go a bit higher lie 4:88's. Especially if you have a 22re.

 

It clears 31's fine right now, but lacks the lift for 33's. so for now, ill be keeping the 31's, and maybe way down the road, lift it and throw on some 33's. so, 4.88's sounds like the correct ratio. as this truck is driven daily, and played with on weekends, this should hel me out greatly as this thing lugs hard as it sits!

 

4.88's It will get you back to stock and then some. Should pick up some power, but your rpms will read about 100rpm higher then normal.. Not a big issue unless you spend all day at 80mph...

 

4.88s is a bit much on a 31. You will be screaming on the highway. 33, fine.

so, is there anyone who runs 4:88s with 31s? just looking for an opinion on this from someone who actually drives with this setup regularly. i was thinking it would be a great combo esp. for the hills and street driving. i ask because i was planning on regearing before upgrading tires. i'm really tired of doggin' it with the 4.10s and 31s, especially when I go up any sort of inclined road. i scored a new 4:88 R&P for the front for $30 and just found some used 4:88 front and rears in their housings for $450 (good price?) that I'm hoping are not yet sold.

 

if you know you're going to 33's, do the 4.88's now. better now than finding out the 4.56's are too tall for your liking when you do the 33's and have to regear again.
you may loose a little mileage with the 4.88's and 31's if you're on the highway all the time since the engine will be revving higher (not much, but you'll notice it), but mixed / around town, you'll probably find yourself shifting sooner and making up the difference (or maybe not... you might like the extra torque and whomp it alot ).
