Gear Shift won't release

I have a 1993 4 Runner. The gear shift won't release. I try to depress the button and can't shift. I can depress the Shift Lock OverRide button and the gear shift will move. Any ideas on what is wrong?

That just happened to mine. But a day later I took it out for a manual.

want me to guess , the switch on thebrake pedal , but check for a blown fuse .

No. How do I check the switch? Is there a sensor that may have gone bad?

If the switch on the brake pedal was bad I would think you wouldnt have brake lights.

Blown stop fuse, bad stop light switch (better check to see if your brake lights work) or a console full of gooey mocha.
