Gear setup gurus please help

So I recently bought a set of pumpkins with 5.29 gears and lunchbox lockers. Guy said he'd been running them with no issues.

I put them in my truck the other day, and went for a drive. It seems that there is more slop so to say, like a worn motor mount. My trans mount is fairly warn, and there was slop before, but it feels a little more now.

I'm wondering what causes this? the new lower ratio gears? lockers? or setup? I would think it would be that the gears aren't set quite right and need some more preload... am I correct?

Low cbpl would not be noticed outside of actually checking for it and not help your original problem/question. I think you answered you own question though. The locker does put extra pressure on the drive line and will show you worn mounts but the lockers also by nature feel "loose." I think that isn't be word to use but I could see it being used to discribe how a locker feels to someone new to them.

I would say it is just the fact that the ratio is higher. This would amplify any slop that was in the drive line to begin with.

Kiff---The higher ratio will add to the sloppy feeling....but the lunchbox locker is the main cause. There is nothing you can do about that....just modify your driving style. 5 speeds and lunchbox lockers equals clunkiness....automatics and lunchbox lockers is smooooth.
The main function of CBPL is to stop/reduce ring deflections and overall superior gear strength.

Yeah dude, you got lunchboxes.

What did you expect?

Just gotta deal with it. Good luck with the steering too on high traction in 4wd. Should be good times.

I Don't have a issue with the problem, I can adapt to the clunk, I was just not wanting to destroy a good set of gears. as for driving around, it seems fine, in the wet last night I had no issues with a back end walking out on me. So far two thumbs up!

cool tool for tightening, Take a piece of pipe about 12 inches long and weld two bolt that fit into the cpbl, works good! When your tightening them hold the pinion shaft and turn the ring gear back and forth, you only want a slight bit of play.
