Gear ratio math

Gear ratio math
ok, I got the front diff out of a 94 p/up 22re 5 speed - I used a punch and marked a tooth on each; the pinion and the ring, and then counted 3 times to make sure I got the same number everytime.
It has 42 on the ring and 11 on the pinion. Do I understand the math correctly that you divide 42/11 to get the ratio? that equals 3.81 - can that be right? seems odd to me.
EDIT - Pictures, cuz everyone likes pictures

yes, they are way in the back, had to look through the bottom. I am positive I counted the pinion
the axle code in the jamb is B03A - which toyota nations chart shows as 8" 4.10 2 pinion

ok gents - I have concluded a recent study
ALCOHOL HAS SIGNIFICANT EFFECTS ON MY ABILITY TO COUNT.
Katie just got home and I made her count them a couple of times and she got 41 and 10 every time, so apparently I am mildly retarded
Thanks for putting up with me Dale.
Back to my Capt and Coke,
J
PS... I have a matched set of 4.10 front and rear 4 cyl diffs/axle assemblies for sale.

Sounds like you counted the tooth that you punch marked as "1", then you went around the gear and counted the punched tooth again at the end? Glad to hear you figured it out, though. 4.10's sounds better than 3.81's.
