There are several - seems every manufacturer makes one. I had a Radio Shack, it was OK, but nothing compared to the Uniden I have now (Pro510XL I think).

Be sure to get a GOOD antenna and spend some time with an SWR meter getting it tuned in.

x2 on the uniden like TC said, it is probably what I will go with for my '81

This is what I have though in my '05, all the controls are in the mic handle, just connect the cable when I need to use it, the main part of the radio mounts behind the glove box...seems i got mine a lot cheaper though but this was the link i found first...

Thing i like about it is that when the attenna is removed it doesn't advertise to every tweeker on the block that you have extra stuff for them to rip off...

are you really sure about the ashtray thing? i have a bigger unit, model#538 which i simplely drop it in between the passenger seat tand center console. no installation needed. splice the power cord into a cig. lighter plug($5 at Radio Shack). put the magnetic of antenna($15 at Fry's with 15' of cable rigged), you are good to go.

it's so so much easier to adjust the knobs when they are right by your hand compare to reaching forward to the buttom of the dash(ashtray). the whole installation including conecting the power should take you no more than half hour.

then screw the micphone clip on to the rear ashtray, if you want

i can give you some detailed steps if you need.

I just installed a Midland something or other CB (got it for free, has been laying around new in box for years) in the area above the ashtray but below the radio today. It was one of the longer skinnier ones so I cut out that little cubby hole to fit it and attached its mounting bracket to the cubby plasting. I'll take a pic later, it turned out cool.

If you want small, then most any of the smaller ones at Wal-Mart will do. The trick is setting up the antennae properly. I went with a unit that I have trusted for years. Required some dash mod, but is well worth it. I went ahead and installed a 102" whip mounted to the center of my toolbox and ran ground wire to the frame rails on both sides.

Cobra WXSTII. No modification needed. The only special thing i needed was a 90* Coax connector since there was no room in thr back for the coax to go straight on.

Tell me about it, all of a sudden there's like 3 or 4 threads running on CB's and radios. What's up with the sudden interest in CB's again?

You can't fit the narrow CB radio's in the ash tray slot on 1st gen 4runners.

I tried. It's not deep enough and the radio sticks out too far. If you have a 5 speed you won't be able to shift gears.

I would do like Brandon and put it in the radio slot....Even there it would be hard to reach the knobs with the stick in 1st, 3rd, or 5th.

I think CB's are a pain....and they aren't as good as GMRS or FRS. But, in your situation, I can see the use.
