gear install questions?

ok i finally got my 5.29's in the mail i dis-assembled my 3rd and got everything re-assembled, my pinion didint have any shims on it so hence no shims on the new one, anyways to have a deeper contact pattern i would have to put a shim on the pinion first? then the inner bearing?....if so how n the bajesus do you get it off without destroying it? it took about 15 min of pounding with mini sledge to get it on there (no press for me) ive seen somwhere a pic of some1 using a 2 jaw puller, but i dun think that will work.. any ideas?

the hammer works fine, no probs there, just gotta be careful and use a block of wood or something, i got the inner bearing on using the solid spacer and the old crush spacer and a 2x4 n a mini sledge, worked like a charm, just have to have some 1 hold it all to gether but yeah im still wondering about the shims, im still reading around and it says if you need to adjust contact pattern pull the carrier and press out the outter bearing add shims and re-assemble...but if i do that then im adding shims to my solid spacer?!? so yeah just want some conformation and an idea on how to take off the inner bearing without destroyind it...:BIGOK:

You will need a bearing puller and a press. No way around it.

You can check out Zuk's site for a list of quality tools and numerous setups. I will caution you about doing it without the proper tools. www.gearinstalls.com

yeah i just saw this, and funny u suggest zuks site cuz i was just looking at it, and i was going to pay a local 4x4 shop to do it, but guy was a D***k so i said forget it, and i dont know any other shops in the area..and i know about not using the right tools, but you gotta get buy with what you can and for you that are curious about the shims yes they have to be behind the inner bearing, so if your contact pattern is off, your going to have to take the bearing on and off repeated times, thus the need for a press like scotty said..

I've never done gears before so you can take this for what it's worth, but I was watching a 4x4 show one time where the guy bought an extra bearing and then rheemed (sp) it out just enough to where it would slide on without having to be pressed on so that he could take it on and off while adding or removing shims to get the pattern correct. Then once he had the correct pattern he pressed the unmodified bearing on. I know that doesn't help you get your bearing off now, but it may keep you from taking it off again...

here is a pic of the bearing splitter you need. One thing i like to do to make is easier and faster, get a second bearing the same as what your using and hone the inside out where it will slip on the pinion shaft, then you can get it set up with the setup bearing and then use the unhoned bearing after getting your pattern,,,,

If your working on a IFS diff. here is a case spreader I use to spread the case a little,,, this one looks pretty crude because I made it really late one night while I was tired of fighting the thing, but it works so good I have never redone it,,,, hope this helps,,,,,

Lol,,, I was posting at the same time as 90RunnerRed,,,,

also if you guys could help me, my carrier bearings slip right on with no effort, and zuk takes care of this by using Sleeve lock? by loctite...i cant find it, ANYWHERE and i guess loctite makes thousands of products kinda hard to sift threw, so if some 1 could provide a part # or maybe the proper name?? that would be friggin awesome

Hey yoterr-
I get this feeling that your gonna cause more damage and end up having the gears be noisy and break after a few offroad trips. You're welcome to send it my way for a good install. But if you want to give it a go then I'd be happy to follow this thread and look forward to helping you get the pinion depth right.
And ya, the carrier bearing closest to the ring gear tends to see the most strain so it sometimes falls off the case and sleeve lock will fix it. Surfaces must be perfectly clean though.

zuk my friend i would LOVE to send you my stuff to make sure its right, but i dont have that kinda cash at the moment, just had to spend the 300 ish on the gears (ugg) but im going to try to get it as right as possible, as it is the pinion hits super shallow, so im going to get a bearing splitter, (if i can find one) and take of the inner pinion bearing add 2 shims n go from there...n thanks

ok. Start with a shim of .075~.080" behind the pinion head.

Yoterr - wish you were a little closer, I'd let you use my press. A bunch of us from FL TTORA are going to Ocala on Nov 13, 14, and 15. We are staying at Juniper Springs campground. Come on up if you get the gears in. Should be a good crowd.
